On February 14, 1952, the remains of 123 victims were interred in a common grave, Section 85, Site 63 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in South St. Louis County, MO

When word got out from the Palawan survivors, rescue operations were planned for the other Japanese run POW camps.

120 Army Rangers led by Col Henry A. Mucci, executed a rescue of the POWs at Cabanatuan.

Hampton Sides excellent book about the raid on Cabanatuan, "Ghost Soldiers" opens with the Palawan Massacre.

The 2005 movie, "The Great Raid" depicted the rescue mission at Cabanatuan.

Don T. Schloat was imprisoned on Palawan. Along with another POW, they attempted an escape. The two were caught and anticipated beheading (as was the common practice by their Japanese captors.) They were sent to Bilibid Prison in Manila.

Don Schloat survived the Bataan Death March, Palawan and Bilibid. After the war, Don returned to the Los Angeles area and worked (with his brother G. Warren Schloat, Jr.) as an animator at Walt Disney Studios (Cinderella), moving to Hanna-Barbera Productions (Jonny Quest, Jetsons, Flintstones).

Don Schloat was haunted by what happened to the men he knew at Camp 10-A and began a series of paintings, the "Palawan Martyrs". He then created a bronze statue that was to be cast in a limited number. One bronze was installed at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Another version of the bronze statue was set as part of a monument in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, RP. Some of Mr. Schloat's paintings can be viewed at Old National Guard Armory Museum in Santa Fe, NM.

Don passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the age of 89. Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA
