Explosion on oil tanker off the port of Jeddah.
RIYADH - An explosion was reported off the port of Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, on board a tanker owned by a shipping company from Singapore which said that the blast, followed by several fires, was of external origin.
Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm the explosion, which, according to the Office of Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) of the United Kingdom, occurred on Sunday in front of the key port on the Red Sea, a distribution center of Saudi oil giant Aramco.
The oil tanker BW Rhine was hit from outside while it was unloading in Jeddah by a device that cased an explosion and a fire on board, according to a statement released by Singapore shipping company Hafnia, which did not provide further details.
Last month, an explosion rocked a Greek tanker in the Saudi port of Al-Shuqaiq, in southern Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen attributed responsibility to the rebels supported by Iran. Rebels have intensified attacks against neighboring Saudi Arabia in retaliation for the military campaign in Yemen.
