A few folks with these in a given area covers a lot of types comms with a pc.

There are cheaper homemade options.

 

The Halo long-range Wi-Fi extender and local hub takes a weak Wi-Fi signal – at a marina, truckstop, camp, etc – and boosts it, repeating it back directly to you up to 7 miles away in perfect conditions.

Unless you have height you are not going to be able to get much range with a handheld.

 

I can get 25 miles with a GMRS hi power 7watt baofeng & wire j pole antenna. but I'm 200" up above ground level. It's illegal but works. If you have a licence and can use a repeater you can get decent range if you can hit a repeater.

 

Most ppl will be better served with a wifi mesh of sorts like below
