The woman of Rev. 12 is not Mary, nor is she being "venerated" there. We see the interpretation of who this woman is in Gen. 37 about Joseph's dream. It was JacobISRAELhimself who interpreted the sun, moon, and stars. The 11 stars are Joseph's 11 brothers, therefore, the 12 stars are the 12 tribes of Israel founded by the 12 brothers. The "sun" with which the woman was clothed, being in Joseph's dream Jacob or ISRAEL, is therefore Israel. The "moon", upon which the woman stands, corresponds to Joseph's mother (Rachel or the pagan culture she represents) and the mother of his brothers who were Aramean (Syrian on Abraham's maternal side). As well, Jacob's own mother was an Aramean (Rebekah) showing once again Jacob's heritage, which we find in Deut. 26.
The "Syrian ready to perish" was Jacob, perishing in the drought that caused him to go to Egypt, there becoming 12 tribes with the sons of his Aramean wives. The reason for emphasizing the Aramean side was to emphasize the culture from which Abraham had originally turned. Turning away from his Syrian heritage of Aram (Syria) of Abraham's matriarchal side, he had turned from a heritage centered in lunar worship, the god of which was named "Sin", worshiped in Ur from which Abraham's family had traveled, and in Harran to which they had traveled. Abraham's brothers and father had worshiped the foreign moon god. The woman in Revelation 12 is standing upon the moon as if she were trampling upon it or conquering it. It shows Israel conquering "Sin"!''' One of the meanings of "moon" in the Greek is:
"often in the orient, one put his foot on the vanquished"
Of course, the faithful among Israel conquered sin through the one who came out of the loins of Abraham, Jesus Christ. HE conquered sin, and it is HE who is depicted in Gen. 3:15 as crushing the head of the Serpent, and bruising His own foot in doing so, referring to His crucifixion.
The stars are her "crown" so the 12 tribes of Israel ruled over the vanquished. But not for long, for though Abram had turned his back to the land of Shinar in Ur in Mesopotamia, conquering Sin, the 12 tribes fell back into apostasy, a "third of the stars" cast out "of heaven" from relationship from God because they broke His Covenant by worshiping the QUEEN OF HEAVEN (see Jeremiah rebuking the women and men for seeking the queen of heaven, which he called "abominations" that "made them desolate".
Many in Israel had turned back to the gods of the nations around them, resulting in their captivity to Babylon in the east, from whence Abram and Jacob had turned. The apostates had become wandering stars, falling stars (apostates), having returned to the corruption of the earth, an earth darkened by the Dragon who is Satan, that old Serpent. The Serpent ruled them through sin and through idolatry. But notice it is the "tail" that "drew" them into this idolatrous apostasy. Isaiah informs as to the meaning of tails:
15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. Is. 9
It was the false prophets and apostate priests of Israel having drawn the rebellious among the Jews to worship Baal and the QUEEN OF HEAVEN. These rebellious ones are shown as 1/3 of all Israel, not all. Because of this idolatry, the Jews had been sent into captivity to the Shinar (Babylon) from which Abraham had turned.
But when the Promised Seed came, Jesus Christ, he inherited the throne of David, remitted the sins of the heirs of Righteousness, and ascended into Heaven to cast out the accuser of the Saints from before the throne in Heaven, for no longer was there a place in Heaven for the Accuser of the Saints.
