Before VP whispers, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms' rise propelled by controversial figure

Kasim Reed was the previous mayor of Atlanta.

Keisha Lance Bottoms is the current mayor.

Kasim Reed left office "under shadow of a federal investigation"

The two had close political ties which helped Mayor Bottoms' career.

Mayor Bottoms was hoping to run for VP with Joe Biden.

Author says that Reed's "charisma helped redefine the city’s political landscape over nearly a decade."

"In 2015, Reed appointed her to the powerful position of running the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority (AFCRA), which controls the Atlanta Zoo and State Farm Arena, home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks."

Bottoms was criticized for drawing two city salaries, one as councilwoman and another as "running" the AFCRA.

“I thought that [Bottoms] was the beneficiary of a very strong-handed mayor who wanted to have his people in place in certain positions,” said former Fulton County Commissioner John Eaves.

The federal investigation was about a construction company bribing city officials.

Bottoms resigned from the AFCRA when she ran for mayor.

Reeds heavily supported Bottoms' run for mayor.

Bottoms received major donations from out of state vendors right before her election as mayor.

“She would not be mayor if not for Kasim Reed’s help”

“The kind of corruption that emanated from the Reed administration was unprecedented”
