DETROIT – Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died due to complications from the COVID-19 virus. The 65-year-old Napoleon died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Thursday evening in the company of family, according to his daughter Tiffani Jackson.

Napoleon who was appointed sheriff in 2009 and has been reelected multiple times announced he’d tested positive for the virus on Nov. 19. He was admitted to the hospital the following day and remained there until his death.

His family posted several updates on his condition and maintained hope throughout the battle that Napoleon would fight off the virus for good. As recently as Sunday the family said he seemed to be improving, but his health took a turn during the week.

As news of his death spread, many prominent leaders expressed their sadness over the loss, but also their admiration for the life Napoleon led.

“I am heartbroken at the news of my dear friend Benny’s passing,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Sheriff Napoleon’s love for the people he served was returned many times over. His quick laugh, eager partnership, and candid counsel is what I will miss most. He was a truly special person. Sharon, Tiffani and his whole family are in my prayers.”

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II echoed those sentiments, adding that Napoleon was an ally and championed changes in the justice system to improve society.

“Sheriff Benny Napoleon’s passing is a tremendous loss for the city of Detroit, Wayne County, and the entire state of Michigan,” Gilchrist said. “Benny was a pillar in the community — a model public servant who lead by example through conscientious words and selfless service.”

Along with serving as Wayne County Sheriff, Napoleon also served as chief of police in Detroit from 1998 until 2001. In 2013, Napoleon ran for mayor of Detroit, eventually losing to current Mayor Mike Duggan. After hearing of Napoleon’s death, Duggan said he was “shocked and saddened” by the news.
