Let's assume they have been in control for a very very long time and have guided our history as a result. All the prophecies could come true if they were the ones making them and guiding the results. What if they planned a catastrophic event to take out the worlds population and had the means to do so? What if the good guys said, hell no, and took the samson option away from them. All that symbolism would be evidence of their plans. Only it doesn't happen that way now. We get to see the truth instead. People would be seriously pissed off to find out they had plans to off us all along.
