You forgot one BIG One.
ARG.
Good ARGs have lots of real-world stuff to support the game. Everyone playing treats it as if it's all real, and everyone works together, sharing clues and info to reach a payoff.
Good ARGs have a satisfying and rewarding conclusion. I hope this one does. I don't think it will.
Remember Bad Self Eater?
Slight thread drift from an armchair game theorist.
Badselfeater began as a very intricate ARG, promising high value payoff. For whatever reason, the production value of the payoff was significantly lower than the build-up. The reasons for that are unclear, but it was obviously an asymmetric game in retrospect. It would make sense that it was a bit of a meta game to develop future crowd-sourcing projects. Q's strategy may have been influence by lessons learned, but there are some marked differences. Q is much more text/research-driven with internal coded references. There are a few image puzzles, but not to the degree that BSE relied on pictures and geography to drive momentum.
Q stated, "this is not a game." On one level, that's true, in that the potential outcomes are not "fun." On a different 40,000+ foot level, anything including warfare can be described as a game. Risk, payoffs, etc. all have varying values depending on the players. I ripped this quote straight from Wikipedia: "Game theory is "the study of mathematical models of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational decision-makers".
Going one step above that, to orbital satellite view, it's not a game for the people reading Q posts, at least right now. "Team Q" is obviously fluent in game mechanics, as we are given clues in terms of known games (chess, "War Games," and even elements of the movie "The Game"). Game theory informs their moves, and they laid that out well in the post addressing impatience and rounding people up.
BSE got people engaged in playing what turned out to be an asymmetric game. The rules for engaging with Q vs spectating are still not disclosed, and many people are probably assuming a big payoff for what is so far a purely intellectual and emotional stake in the outcome.
