A special analysis report authored by the National Counterterrorism Center (NCC), the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security focuses on a neo-Nazi-influenced satanic group called the Order of Nine Angles, which the intelligence community believes is making inroads among white supremacists. Nine Angles “is a largely decentralized group that advocates a violent extremist interpretation of Satanism,” the document says. “Satanism is a religion with multiple variants, most of which are not violent extremist.”

The Order of Nine Angles, which originated in the U.K., came to public attention in the U.S. earlier this year when Ethan Melzer, an Army private, was charged in a violent plot aimed at his own unit. Melzer allegedly shared details of his unit with the Order of Nine Angles.

The attacks show that the hackers were able to find a glaring loophole affecting both private and public sectors, and they had access to potentially exploit a huge number of companies and government departments. But they also indicate that, whoever the attackers were, they only chose to steal data from a selection of thousands of victims, even where they had the chance to steal data from some of the world’s biggest businesses.

SolarWinds said the number of customers who might be affected by the attacks could be as high as 18,000. Reuters reported on Friday that Cox Communications had been hit by the malicious version of the SolarWinds tool, but had not seen any major impact.

The government bodies that were hit include the departments of Defense, Energy, Treasury and Commerce. As Forbes previously reported, the DOJ is also a user of SolarWinds Orion, but it has declined to comment on whether or not it was a victim.

In a press release on Friday night, Ford Hood announced that Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur “Cliff” Burgoyne was being suspended by Fort Hood commander Lt. Gen. Pat White “based on recent allegations that he used unprofessional language inconsistent with Army values.”

An investigation into the allegations is being conducted by U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM).

An Army official told Task & Purpose that the language used by Burgoyne was not related to race, gender, sexual orientation, or sexual harassment. What Burgoyne said falls into the category of toxic leadership, the official said.
