One rule for thee, and one rule for me. That sort of hypocrisy has been baked into human power relations, since, well, forever. As the Greek historian Thucydides wrote 2,500 years ago, “The strong do what they will, and the weak suffer what they must.”
Today, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are seeing power-hypocrisy once again, as politicians and plutocrats live one way, while telling everyone else to live another way.
A case in point is California’s oh-so-chic governor, Gavin Newsom. The handsome darling of billionaires, a man on everyone’s shortlist of future Democratic presidential hopefuls, Newsom got caught with his mask down at The French Laundry, a Michelin three-star restaurant in the Golden State’s posh Napa Valley.

In that incident, Newsom was photographed, maskless, in close proximity to a dozen or so donors and lobbyists in a private room at the restaurant. In response, Miriam Paweł, a longtime chronicler of California Democratic politics, penned a fiery op-ed in the New York Times, headlined, “Gavin Newsom, What Were You Thinking?” As she wrote, “It is hard to say which was more astounding, the hypocrisy or the hubris.” That is, Newsom was partying, even as he was ordering lockdowns for the masses—who, of course, hadn’t been invited to his soirée.
Continuing, Paweł added:
The party at a restaurant where dinner for two costs more than many people earn in a week reinforced a fundamental schism between those who value government as a force for good and those who resent it as the bastion of an out-of-touch elite oblivious to peoples’ needs.
A Tea Partier couldn’t have said it any better.
It’s inarguable that we need strong—as well as, of course, smart—measures to stop the virus, and yet such measures can be credibly imposed only by leaders who are willing to abide by the same standards themselves, and further possessing, meanwhile, a sense of a common destiny with the populace. Thus, President Theodore Roosevelt, who had fought and ranched alongside ordinary Americans earlier in his life, was able to say to an audience of Kansans in 1903:
Townsman and farmer, employer and employed, we must make up our minds that we shall rise or fall together.
People will put up with a lot of privation if they know that the burden is being fairly shared by all, according to a single standard—no special privileges for anyone.
By contrast, Newsom and his fellow elitists seem to be offering nothing but special deals to their cronies—and bad deals to everyone else. That unfair reality is made clear by the fate of another California restaurant, the Pineapple Hill Saloon & Grill in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles. Local authorities ordered that restaurant—boasting zero Michelin stars and no glittering customers—to be closed, including its new tented outdoor seating area. And yet at the same time, a Hollywood production company was allowed to set up its commissary facility—including its own tented area for eating—just a few feet away. In other words, while one tent was closed, another tent was allowed to open, right there for local-news TV cameras to see.
It was a shocking juxtaposition, showing power on the one hand and powerlessness on the other. The well-connected Hollywood types, officially deemed an “essential industry,” can operate freely, while mere ordinary restaurants are closed down. Breitbart News and many other sites highlighted the pleas of restaurateur Angela Marsden, now sadly facing financial ruin.

Over 95 Per Cent of Fish Taken from British Marine Protected Area Went to EU
Over 95 per cent of the fish taken out of Britain’s marine protected areas is ending up in the European Union, according to researchers.
Britain’s Conservative Party-led government has already agreed to pay the EU a multi-billion “divorce” settlement — despite having paid far more into the EU budget than t had taken out over the decades — and submit the British province of Northern Ireland to EU regulations in an attempt to secure a Brexit deal, but the bloc is still refusing to agree one, with its demands for continued control over Britain’s national fisheries a key sticking point.
Now a report by the Blue Marine Foundation revealing that over 95 per cent of the 100,000 tonnes taken from Dogger Bank in 2017 and 2018 went to the EU in an “unlawful asset-stripping operation” has added a further wrinkle to the dispute. with the NGO arguing catches which damage the marine environment, vital for the survival of porpoises, seals, and other marine life, are illegal under the Offshore Habitats Regulations.
“What should make it even easier for ministers to enforce the law is the disclosure today that almost none of this unlawful fishing activity is actually benefiting the UK Treasury and in fact it is damaging a marine asset that absorbs lots of carbon, thereby costing the UK money reducing its emissions elsewhere in the economy,” said Blue Marine Foundation executive director Charles Clover.
“What’s happening on the Dogger Bank is not an isolated example – throughout the UK’s waters, we see supposedly protected areas full of destructive industrial fishing boats that don’t even land their catch in UK ports,” said agreed Greenpeace head of oceans Will McCallum.
“Now with Brexit looming large on the horizon, our Government must seize this second chance to turn promises into a reality by properly protecting our marine protected areas and ensuring that our local, more sustainable fleet has great access to our fish.”
The European Economic Community, as the EU then was, changed its rules to designate national fishing waters as a so-called “common resource” shortly before Britain joined the bloc in the 1970s, bringing the richest fisheries in Western Europe with it.
It doles out the lion’s share of Britain’s fish to other EU member-states, with a significant proportion of what is supposed to be Britain’s quota also being landed in the EU by foreign vessels which take the British flag — a trick Parliament tried and failed to outlaw in the 1980s, with judges ruling it could not be stopped under European law.
Consequently, the European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) has seen tens of thousands of British fishing industry jobs destroyed over the years, and the fishing fleet reduced to less than half its former size.
Reclaiming full control over Britain’s territorial waters is a longstanding goal of Brexiteers, but EU negotiators are determined to retain a degree of control over them, and may even have threatened to ban the British from selling fish into EU markets if they do not submit — a punishment which it has not inflicted on Iceland or Norway, which participate in the EU Single Market via the European Economic Area (EEA) but have not been forced to give up control over their fisheries.
At least ten EU supertrawlers are believed to have descended on Britain’s waters in what may be a last-ditch effort to strip its fisheries of as much as possible ahead of a potential no-deal Brexit at the end of the 2020 “transition” period.

WHO in Contact With British Officials on New Mutant Coronavirus Strain
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it will release additional information on the new mutant coronavirus strain discovered in the UK as it becomes available.
"We’re in close contact with UK officials on the new #COVID19 virus variant. They’ll continue to share info & results of their analysis & ongoing studies. We’ll update Member States & public as we learn more about the characteristics of this virus variant & any implications," the WHO said on Twitter.
The organization urged people to comply with local coronavirus guidance and take protective measures.
On Saturday, UK health officials announced that the country had identified a new variant of COVID-19, that is virtually unique to the United Kingdom, and can spread more quickly than earlier coronavirus strains.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has introduced fresh coronavirus restrictions, particularly in London and southeast England, to try to prevent the new virus strain from spreading across the country.
On Friday, Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 technical lead for the WHO, said that countries must take steps to control the spread of COVID-19 at this time, in particular to prevent the virus from having further opportunities to mutate, following recent discoveries of new variants of the disease in Denmark, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.
WHO officials, including Van Kerkhove, said earlier this month that there was no evidence at present to suggest that the discovery and spread of new COVID-19 variants would impact the safety or efficacy of vaccines against the disease.

Chicago-area hospital abruptly halts administering COVID vaccine after multiple reactions in staff members
'Out of an abundance of caution…'
One Chicago-area hospital abruptly stopped administering the coronavirus vaccine to its staff after four employees experienced reactions upon receiving the vaccine.
Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville said that since administering the Pfizer COVID vaccine on Thursday, four staff members "experienced tingling and elevated heartrate shortly after the injection," WMAQ-TV reported.
In response, the hospital has stopped administering the vaccine.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we are temporarily pausing vaccinations at Condell, which will allow us time to better understand what may have caused these reactions," the hospital said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Advocate Aurora Health — the umbrella organization of which the Libertyville hospital is a member — cautioned that reactions are not part of a larger problem with the vaccine, highlighting the fact that they have administered thousands of doses with just the four reactions.
"These four team members represent fewer than 0.15% of the approximately 3,000 who have so far received vaccinations across Advocate Aurora Health. At this time, we can share three team members are home and doing well, and one is receiving additional treatment," the hospital system said, WLS-TV reported.
The stoppage, however, was short-lived.
On Saturday, the medical system said they would resume vaccination administration on Sunday, having made necessary adjustments to post-vaccine administration observation times.
"Our site vaccination teams remain prepared to respond quickly and appropriately should anyone experience any kind of reaction," a statement said, WFLD-TV reported. "Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased our post-vaccine evaluation period to 30 minutes for all individuals across all our sites, which exceeds CDC/ACIP recommendations.
Anything else?
The Food and Drug Administration said Friday they are investigating the adverse reactions to the vaccine.
Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said at a press conference that scientists have do not know with certainty what is responsible for the allergic reactions, but pointed to polyethylene glycol as the possible "culprit."
The ingredient is present in both the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccines.
However, health experts say that the allergic reactions do not mean the vaccine is unsafe for Americans with allergies. Instead, only those with a history of allergic reactions to vaccines, or with any of the ingredients present in either vaccine, should temporarily hold off on being inoculated.

What’s Going on with Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts? Even Soros Cheered Roberts at Davos
These past few weeks the dysfunction of the Supreme Court has come to a head. The Court, led by Chief John Roberts, has removed itself from getting involved in the 2020 election. Something’s not right.
The manner in which Chief Justice Roberts runs the Supreme Court is a travesty. It is corrupt. He doesn’t uphold the rule of law, he breaks it.
A week ago the Supreme Court threw out the Texas case which more than 20 states joined in support. This was the first case on the 2020 election based on its merits. It was shocking that the three new Trump judges would not vote to hear the case. This decision led legal legend Lin Wood to share the following tweet:

Turning down the Texas case was not the first questionable act made by Roberts. In October Roberts sided with Pennsylvania and allowed the state to count non- post-marked ballots three days after the election. In June Roberts sided with the liberal judges over ending unconstitutional DACA. During the garbage impeachment hearings Roberts refused to allow the name of the so called ‘whistleblower’ from being spoken out loud during the hearings. In 2018 Roberts lashed out at President Trump for pointing out how insane, corrupt and unconstitutional the Obama judges are. Roberts is a mess.
