European countries including Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium have banned flights carrying passengers from the UK after southern England was plunged into a Tier 4 lockdown in a bid to suppress a 'mutant' strain of coronavirus.
The Netherlands was the first country to announce a travel ban, which will remain in place until January 1, its government said in a statement early today.
The Dutch government added that it is monitoring developments and is considering additional measures regarding other modes of transport.
Neighbouring Belgium also said it was suspending flight and train arrivals from Britain from midnight for 24 hours.
Italian foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said his country would also take action, tweeting: 'As the Government we have the duty to protect Italians, for this reason, after having advised the English (sic) Government, with the health ministry we are signing the measure to suspend flights with Great Britain.'
Austria and the Czech Republic were also imposing new measures against UK flights with Prague announcing stricter quarantine rules with all people arriving in the country having spent at least 24 hours in UK territory required to self-isolate.
Meanwhile, Germany is also considering limiting flights from Britain, the dpa news agency reported on Sunday, with a high-ranking official telling the agency that restrictions on flights from the UK were a 'serious option'.
The German government, which holds the EU's rotating presidency, is in close contact with its European neighbours on the developing situation, dpa reported.
And Ireland is set to impose travel restrictions on flights and ferries from the UK to the Republic later today, to last for 48 hours.
Ministers expect other countries to impose travel bans on UK citizens to prevent the new strain from spreading.
The travel bans came into effect less than 24 hours after Boris Johnson last night claimed that the new strain of Covid-19 might be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than existing strains.
Which begs the question. Why did it take so long to cut travel to and from Wuhan at the beginning of this plandemic??
