Overdose deaths far outpace COVID-19 deaths in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A record 621 people died of drug overdoses in San Francisco so far this year, a staggering number that far outpaces the 173 deaths from COVID-19 the city has seen thus far.
The crisis fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl could have been far worse if it wasn't for the nearly 3,000 times Narcan was used from January to the beginning of November to save someone from the brink of death, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.The data reflects the number of times people report using Narcan to the Drug Overdose Prevention and Education Project, a city-funded program that coordinates San Francisco’s response to overdose, or return to refill their supply. Officials at the DOPE Project said that since the numbers are self-reported, they are probably a major undercount.
Last year, 441 people died of drug overdoses — a 70% increase from 2018 — and 2,610 potential overdoses were prevented by Narcan, a medication commonly sprayed up the nose to reverse an opioid overdose, according to data from the city Medical Examiner's office and the DOPE ProjectThe crisis is deepening because fentanyl, which can be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, flooded the city's drug supply, the newspaper said. Moreover, the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted city services like housing and treatment, and left many people who rely on others to help save them if they overdose to use alone.
While nearly 40% of the deaths occurred in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods near downtown, city data showed the epidemic has touched every part of the city. Many people overdosed in low-income apartment buildings and in city-funded hotel rooms for the homeless. Others died on sidewalks, in alleyways and parks around the city..

Microsoft discovers SECOND hacking team dubbed 'Supernova' installed backdoor in SolarWinds software in March - as Feds say first Russian 'act of war' cyber attack struck at least 200 firms and US federal agencies
Microsoft researchers say a second unidentified hacking team installed a backdoor in the same SolarWinds network software that facilitated a massive cyber espionage campaign, as the number of victims in the attack rose to 200.
The second backdoor, dubbed SUPERNOVA by security experts, appears distinct from the SUNBURST attack that has been attributed to Russia, raising the possibility that multiple adversaries were attempting parallel attacks, perhaps unbeknownst to each other.
It comes after President Donald Trump contradicted members of his own administration to suggest that China may be behind the sprawling attack, which compromised key federal agencies.
'The investigation of the whole SolarWinds compromise led to the discovery of an additional malware that also affects the SolarWinds Orion product but has been determined to be likely unrelated to this compromise and used by a different threat actor,' Microsoft said in a security blog on Friday.
The second backdoor is a piece of malware that imitates SolarWinds' Orion product but it is not 'digitally signed' like the other attack, suggesting this second group of hackers did not share the same access to the network management company's internal systems.
It is unclear whether SUPERNOVA has been deployed against any targets, such as customers of SolarWinds. The malware appears to have been created in late March, based on a review of the file's compile times.
The SUNBURST backdoor was first deployed in March, though the same group behind it appears to have tampered with SolarWinds products as early as October 2019.
In past breaches, security researchers have found evidence that more than one suspected Russian hacking group penetrated the same system, duplicating their efforts in a way that suggested each did not know what the other was doing.
One such case was the breach of the Democratic National Committee's servers in 2016, when CrowdStrike researchers found evidence that Russian hacking groups dubbed Fancy Bear and Cozy Bear had both broken into the system.
It's also possible that the SUPERNOVA and SUNBURST attacks represent the actions of separate nations attempting to use SolarWinds products to penetrate other high-value U.S. targets.
In a statement, a SolarWinds spokesman did not address SUPERNOVA, but said the company 'remains focused on collaborating with customers and experts to share information and work to better understand this issue.'
'It remains early days of the investigation,' the spokesman said.

Although it is crucial to find the pandemic’s source in order to help protect against further eruptions, some experts fear that official investigations will sweep aside even the possibility that Sars-Cov-2 – the strain that causes Covid-19 – might be man-made.
‘A lot of time has been lost and there is still no evidence of an effective independent investigation starting into the origins of Covid-19,’ said Nikolai Petrovsky, professor of medicine at Flinders University in Australia and a leading vaccine researcher.
David Relman, an expert on emerging infectious diseases, has condemned both the WHO and Lancet inquiries for being ‘cloaked in secrecy’ and demanded that conflicts of interest must be ‘addressed’ to ensure credibility.
‘Rather than resorting to hunches and finger-pointing, each scenario must be systematically and objectively analysed using the best available science-based approaches,’ he wrote in the journal of the National Academy of Sciences.

A list of “key domestic contacts” for a joint venture involving Jim and Hunter Biden and now-bankrupt CEFC China Energy Co. included former Vice President Joe Biden‘s current running mate Sen. Kamala Harris, among other prominent Democrats, Fox News has learned.
An email exclusively obtained by Fox News, with the subject line “Phase one domestic contacts/ projects” and dated May 15, 2017, Biden’s brother, Jim Biden, shared a list of “key domestic contacts for phase one target projects.”
The email is unrelated to the laptop or hard drive purportedly belonging to Hunter Biden, the former vice president’s son.
Jim Biden is the Democratic nominee’s brother.

It looks for all the world like the whole Biden family trades on Joe’s long and mediocre career in politics, with Hunter as the tip of the lucrative spear.

"Officials at the White House had been prepared to put out a statement Friday afternoon that accused Russia of being "the main actor" in the hack, but were told at the last minute to stand down, the news agency says, citing a US official familiar with the conversations who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"This is looking like it’s the worst hacking case in the history of America," the official said.
Reuters reported Monday that a group of hackers allegedly working for Russia carried out a cyber attack on December 13 to obtain unauthorized access to computer systems of the US Department of Homeland Security. The department itself confirmed that cyber attack had taken place. According to Reuters, the hackers got their hands on data from the Department of State and the Pentagon.

Democratic memo declares 'rise of white Christian nationalism is a national security threat'
A Political Action Committee and a group of Democratic lawmakers want Joe Biden to pursue a 'secular agenda' that pushes back religious liberty gains made under Trump.
The Secular Democrats of America PAC prepared a report for Joe Biden and his transition team that outlines a roadmap to "boldly restore a vision of constitutional secularism and respect in the land for religious and intellectual pluralism."
The federal political action committee "represents secular Democratic individuals and organizations" and advocates for "secular governance, promote respect and inclusion of nonreligious Americans, and mobilize nonreligious voters."
The proposal was formally presented by Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin and Jared Huffman, co-chairs of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, and endorsed by Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney.
“We’ve offered the new administration a roadmap to restore our basic constitutional values and protect science, reason and public health in American government,” Raskin and Huffman said in a joint statement.
The proposal calls for Biden's team to work with Congress and governors to "advance a secular agenda at all levels of government, taking into account the current makeup of the federal courts and new, unfavorable precedents that your administration will have to contend with."
In the document, the group argues that Trump has "empowered the religious right in ways no other administration has before, making significant advances in enacting their Christian nationalist agenda."
The proposal outlines recommendations for reversing certain policies and "proactively" implementing new rules that would "restore secularism to federal governance and disentangle entrenched religious interests from federal policy."
Some of the recommendations in the document are related to Homeland Security policy.
"The rise of white Christian nationalism is a national security threat," read the document. "We recommend you: encourage the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to dedicate resources to de-radicalization programs aimed at hate groups, including, but not limited to, white nationalists; increase monitoring of such groups, including the online environment, and take action to address increased hate crimes toward minority faith communities; and shift rhetoric to label violent white nationalist extremists as terrorists."

In Chile, Resistance Is Criminalised and Perpetrators of Crimes Against Humanity Are Absolved
Last November, memory and human rights organisations in Chile, as well as relatives of dictatorship victims endured yet another blow in the Chilean courts’ decision to acquit 60 former DINA agents of their roles in the kidnapping, torture, murder and disappearance of 16 Revolutionary Left Militants (MIR), between 1974 and 1975. Operation Colombo, or the Case of the 119, as it is also known, was a dictatorship clandestine operation which sought to track down and eliminate the socialist forces opposing Augusto Pinochet’s U.S.-backed dictatorship. The coverup utilised by the dictatorship included right-wing media, which blamed their disappearance on infighting between the militants themselves.
Among the acquitted agents is Miguel Krassnoff Martchenko – a notorious name among torture survivors who, witnesses say, even refused to hide his identity during torture, and a hero figure among the right-wing Pinochet supporters who have idolised Krassnoff’s image and erroneously painted him as a prisoner “for serving Chile”.
Decades after Operation Colombo, Chile’s courts still have issues with penalising the perpetrators of crimes against humanity. Lawyer Nelson Caucoto Pereira described the Chilean court’s sentence as “violating the principles of proportionality” with regard to international human rights law and further questioned how the Chilean state can guarantee that the same crimes would not be repeated.
The protests which were triggered by an increase in bus fares in October 2019 and which quickly swept across Chile, with the nation calling for an end to the dictatorship constitution and for Chilean President Sebastian Pinera to step down, have illustrated Chile’s concept of state violence and how this emulates dictatorship tactics. Russian scientist working on COVID-19 vaccine plummets to death in St. Petersburg
A prominent Russian scientist who was working on a COVID-19 vaccine was found dead with a stab wound after plummeting out his window in St. Petersburg, according to news reports.
Alexander “Sasha” Kagansky, 45, was in his underwear when he fell to his death from his 14th-floor apartment, according to the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets.
The scientist also suffered a stab wound, police said.
Police believe there was a scuffle before Kagansky fell from the building, reports said.
Russian police say they are investigating Kagansky’s death as a possible homicide and questioning a 45-year-old man as a potential suspect, e2news.com said.
Kagansky, best known for his work on cancer research, was an assistant professor in Vladivostok and had spent 13 years working in Edinburgh, Scotland, until 2017, the outlet said.
He was most recently working as director of the Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine at Russia’s Far Eastern Federal University.
He had been working on developing a vaccine against the coronavirus, e2news said.
Kagansky’s body was found by a neighbor on Zamshin Street, the report said.

Contrary to what Michigan election officials insist, redacted information from the forensic audit of the Dominion machines indicate votes were, indeed, flipped from Trump to Biden
Michigan Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson (D), won a court ruling that ordered the redaction of critical evidence found in a forensic examination of Dominion Voting System machines and software that proves empirically that the enacted algorithm was written to flip votes.
Russell Ramsland Jr., the analyst who led the forensic audit team on Dominion Voting Systems machines and software in Michigan, said Friday that the information state officials successfully petitioned the court to order redactions in their report that hide information that the outcomes of November 3, 2020, General Election races were changed.
Lawyers for Benson’s office petitioned 13th Circuit Judge Kevin Elsenheimer last week to order the redaction of the computer logs before allowing the forensic audit report’s release.
Benson’s lawyers – essentially lawyers for the Democrat Executive Branch elected officials in that state – argued that the logs “might be source code” and publishing them could be a security issue.
“The original report had log evidence that we published in the report to show exactly what we did and exactly the findings. Now, those did ultimately get redacted. And so now, the complaint is ‘well, but there’s no real proof and Dominion says ‘no, these things can’t be done,’” Ramsland said during an interview with the media.
“But at that point, Dominion’s argument is no longer with us,” Ramsland continued to say. “Dominion’s argument is with their own user’s manual and their own logs, because the logs—had they been able to be published—show very clearly that the RCV [ranked-choice voting] algorithm was enacted. It shows very clearly that the error messages were massive. It was very clear that races were flipped.”
Ramsland is a former Reagan administration official with Ivy league pedigrees from Harvard and Duke Universities. He worked for NASA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before co-founding the Allied Security Operations Group, the firm that performed the forensic examination.

US House Intelligence Panel Chief Slams Trump For Blaming China Instead of Russia for Massive Hack
Several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle previously reiterated accusations levelled by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who claimed that it was "pretty clear" that Russia was behind the cyberattack on several government institutions. However, Trump appeared to disagree with him, suggesting that China might be the culprit.
The chairman of the House Committee on Intelligence, Democrat Adam Schiff, has blasted President Donald Trump in an interview with MSNBC over POTUS’ alleged downplaying of Russia's supposed role in the recent cyberattacks on the US government and pointing the finger at China instead.
"It [is] just uniformly destructive and deceitful, and injurious […] to our national security", Schiff said, commenting the president's earlier tweets on the matter.
Schiff went on to claim that he does not "think there's any question" that Russia was behind the massive hack, the impact (if any) of which on government computer networks remains unclear.
Lawmakers and Secretary of State Disagree With President on Culprit of Hacks
The statements by the Intelligence Committee chief go in line with similar claims made by the Senate Intelligence Committee’s head, Republican Marco Rubio, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, both of whom have accused Moscow of the cyberattacks, with both also failing to present any evidence to support their claims.
The methods used to carry out the cyberhack are consistent with Russian cyber operations.

Rubio claimed that the methods used to carry out the attack were "consistent with Russian cyber operations", although it is not clear whether Rubio, or Schiff for that matter, has been briefed on the attack. Pompeo vaguely stated that he could "say pretty clearly" that Moscow participated in the cyber intrusion.
Russia, in turn, has strongly denied involvement. President Vladimir Putin noted during his major 17 December press conference that, as is customary with the "Russia did it" accusations, the new claims against the Kremlin are unsubstantiated. He further suggested that the theory that Russia was behind the hacks was being peddled in the US media by the very people who groundlessly accused the Kremlin of interfering in the 2016 US election.

The researchers propose using the data from your browsing, search, and purchase history to create a mechanism for determining the credit rating of an individual or business.
The plan is outlined in a blog written by Arnoud Boot, Peter Hoffmann, Luc Laeven and Lev Ratnovski, pitching the Orwellian notion as a breakthrough in financial technology (Fintech).
Fintech resolves the dilemma by tapping various nonfinancial data: the type of browser and hardware used to access the internet, the history of online searches and purchases. Recent research documents that, once powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, these alternative data sources are often superior than traditional credit assessment methods, and can advance financial inclusion.
Overall, while much of the technological progress in finance is evolutionary, its pace is accelerating fast. Fintech’s potential to reach out to over a billion unbanked people around the world, and the changes in the financial system structure that this can induce, can be revolutionary.
Governments should follow and carefully support the technological transition in finance. It is important to adjust policies accordingly and stay ahead of the curve.

As it is, getting the really fine soft-data points would probably require companies like Facebook and Apple to loosen up their standards on linking unencrypted information with individual accounts. How they might share information with other institutions would be its own can of worms.
However, the policy seems to be designed to bring an end to alternate news media with grave consequences for those engaged with the organisation.

In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Nunes said the messages, which the Justice Department and FBI declassified earlier this month, should have been provided to Congress years ago when Republicans began investigating whether the FBI abused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in order to surveil Trump campaign aide Carter Page.
“They knew that we were investigating FISA abuse, why would this not have been given to Congress? This is just another example we’re going to have to do another criminal referral,” Nunes said Sunday.
The messages in question are from Strzok’s Lync account, the FBI’s internal messaging system. The messages, which The Daily Caller News Foundation published on Thursday, show Strzok discussing details of Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign.
The messages show Strzok, who was fired from the FBI in August 2019, commenting on July 28, 2016, about open counterintelligence investigations related to Trump. The FBI has insisted that the bureau was not investigating Trump before Strzok opened Crossfire Hurricane on July 31, 2016.
Nunes has long doubted the FBI’s official claims about the beginning of its investigation of the Trump campaign.
He said Sunday that Strzok’s messages show the FBI’s narrative “was always nonsense.”
Strzok sent a message to another FBI employee on Sept. 23, 2016, asserting that former British spy Christopher Steele had spoken to a news outlet regarding a dossier he compiled on Donald Trump in order to “influence” the FBI’s investigation.
The Justice Department inspector general blasted the Crossfire Hurricane team for withholding exculpatory information regarding the Steele dossier in its applications for FISA warrants against Carter Page.

YouTube Removes Video of Trump Lawyer’s Opening Statement at Senate Committee Hearing
YouTube has removed the opening statement from President Donald Trump’s lawyer Jesse Binnall before the Senate Homeland Security hearing on election fraud.
YouTube has said that they will be removing “content alleging widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of a historical U.S. presidential election.”
Binnall tweeted about the censorship on Saturday.
“YouTube has decided that my opening statement in the U.S. [Senate], given under oath and based upon hard evidence, is too dangerous for you to see; they removed it. To this day, ‘our evidence has never been refuted, only ignored.’ Why is Google so afraid of the truth? #BigBrother,” lawyer Jesse Binnall wrote on Twitter.
