Why did the Nazi's kill people with "mental illness"? Why have there been attempts to sterilize people with "mental illness? Because we are a major threat to them.

Manic Depressive disorder as they've named it is hereditary. This access to "madness" runs in the family and is passed through generations. They need to stop us because the gifted can see through them. We can see the truth through the shadows. We can connect to God despite their attempts to cloud him in darkness. We are the light. We will shine through and end them for good.

This is analogous to Star Wars. The ability to connect with the force is hereditary. Jedi pass this ability to their children. It's in the interest of the emperor to kill all the Jedi because they pose a threat to him and the dark side.
