QuestionIf any online type of voting is available, are ANY of the vote counting systems, allegedly not connected to the internet, connected to a LAN to move online votes to the voting machines? Could that be an access? (Although I don't buy that the machines can't be accessed via the internet)
Or, those votes have to be moved somehow- via a USB which could then download from the online system something besides votes?
While we absolutely need to accommodate disabled and military voters, we already know that some officials allegedly misused military votes. Nothing like painting a picture with a good and necessary deed covering something else.
Question remains- what is the path into the vote counting machines for counting from online voting systems?
Some digging:
A ballot marking device, ex. AutoMark, is an electronic ballot marker designed for use by people who are unable to actually mark an optical scan ballot due to physical impairments or language barriers. https://verifiedvoting.org/election-system/ess-automark/ These are the types of machines at the polls for the disabled. HAVA started that.
But now, under the guise of disability, out of country, or military, internet based systems are creeping in. For years secretaries of state and voting orgs have been trying to get these. While we need to accommodate people, internet anything is a disaster. Even those that purport to allow you to mark the ballot, then print and mail it, are not secure. Think of mailing the ballot as a placebo. You don't know if your vote was cast when you marked the ballot or when it was received in the mail. And you still don't know if your vote was cast as marked.
There are Internet andRemote Ballot Marking Systems: Client or Server
Remote ballot marking systems allow voters to receive a blank ballot to mark electronically, print, and then cast by returning the printed ballot to the elections office. https://civicdesign.org/projects/remote-ballot-marking/
Blockchain? (Just threw this in here)
The National Academies of Sciences report states that “blockchain technology does little to solve the fundamental security issues of elections, and indeed, blockchains introduce additional security vulnerabilities”. Blockchain technology is designed to keep information secure once it is received. It cannot defend against the multitude of threats to that information before it is entered in the blockchain, and voters cannot verify their votes are entered into the blockchain correctly without compromising ballot secrecy. Recording ballots on a blockchain also risks ballot secrecy if encryption keys are not properly protected or software errors allow decryption of individual ballots. https://verifiedvoting.org/internet-voting-faq
More states have some form of internet or remote ballot marking than do not. It's creeping in. Here are some systems-
