"gun fights" may have just been recorded gunfire blasted over the PA to attract attention and scare people away. If it was a military operation of some kind they would have HAD to do some hearts and minds bullshit like try to evacuate the area to even get the pilot to drop the bomb on a "civilian" building in a large city on home turf.

Oak ridge national labs and redstone arsenal are both within 200 miles and maybe they had their primary comms routed through there. Perhaps the attack at at&t was meant to trigger some failsafe that causes a data backup that can be captured elsewhere. (think like live free or die hard) Or maybe it was just a distraction so something could be accomplished while the communications were all knocked out in the area.
