Imagine that someday in the future humanity achieves total post-scarcity, eternal life etc.
They also have time travel, but are afraid to use it, because paradoxes
But they do want to save their ancestors from death.
So they first devise a plan, to implant everyone with a chip, that will download the consciousness to itself and can be retrieved after the individual has played his role in history and died.
They also want to give people hope, so they calculate another plan to influance the past but under one rule.
Their can be additional people be born, but there can not be a situation, where somebody that was originally born didn't get born after they have changed history.
Massive computers, beyond our dreams have made countless simulations to derive this plan.
And so religions as we know them were born.
Then another crazy plan was invented.
Since we have all these non sencient, but highly inteligent robots, that can be made to look human outside and inside, and We know exactly what a particular individual will do in his lifetime to the second.
We can do a switcheroo.
So they tested it in the future, where they would go back a few minutes, switch a volunteer out for a robot to do various tasks, and observed how it would affect the future.
Once they were sure, that it would not disrupt their present, they started to switch.
But wait, said somebody, if we bring them right to our reality, they will be freaked out, they can go into shock, they will think, they were abducted by aliens, went into coma, or God knows what. It's actually easier when the individual "died", excepty the horrific "oh my God i will die and be gone forever in a second" phase. which can last as long as someone thinks he died and it's his brains last seconds, that is what they were tring to spare us by switching us out for robots, so we do not have to go thru death in order to get to their heaven.
So they created countles simualtions of the past words and just sent the individuals there, so they won't even know, they're not in the real world anymore.
Then THE PLAN was devised to slowly wake the individuals to what has happened, and where (or rather when) they now are.
