Have had that happen too. I just gave it to someone entering and they did it for me. I feel your frustration.
The issue in my location isn’t even the managers, it’s the people themselves screaming at ones like me who don’t wear one. I’ve tried logic and it doesn’t work. I just ignore them, pay and leave. Nobody comes to bat for me ever, which gets old.
