FOX8 reports how a woman driving through Hope Memorial Gardens on the afternoon of Dec. 23 witnessed a blue, mid-sized car driving out of the area. The car was being trailed by a little boy running after it, his dog in tow. The car did not stop, but turned west onto State Route 3030.

The little boy said his name was Tony, but didn’t know his last name. He additionally stated he only knew his parents by their first names, and was temporarily placed with a foster family until his relatives were found.

In an effort to locate the boy’s parents, Hinckley police asked local news outlets to post a picture of Tony on social media. It worked—a relative saw the photo and contacted Tony’s father, who immediately called the police.

According to authorities, Tony’s father was “very cooperative” with the investigation and indicated that the boy had been in the custody of his mother when the abandonment occurred. He met with officers later that day to search for Tony’s dog at the cemetery. Luckily, they found him running around the vicinity.

In a heartwarming bout of holiday spirit, many people within the community called the station offering to help the little boy. “All of the calls and messages to help Tony are greatly appreciated,” stated Hinckley Chief of Police, David Center. “All of you have renewed my faith and appreciation for the wonderful community we live in.”
