>I was shocked to learn the wings don't hold fuelโฆ
The Wings DO hold SOME Fuel.. just not ALL the Fuel. The Area just in front of that Spar (Dark grey area) from the Wing Root, to just inboard of the Tip, and from that Spar, forward to just behind the Leading Edge is a "wet" area. Those Tanks pump Fuel to the Fuselage Tanks with Boost Pumps, which feed the Engines on Aircraft where the Engines are mounted at the rear. On Wing mounted Engines, they are fed from the Wing Tanks, and Boost Pumps feed the Wing Tanks from the Fuselage Tanks. Fuselage Tanks are also fore and aft, and have transfer (boost) Pumps to maintain weight and balance.

>Do they at all run on nitrogen?
Nitrogen (N2) is used in the Tires, and Pneumatic Struts (Shock Absorbing Landing Gear Struts). That's it.
