I checked out the Ambassador and he looks to be fine, no motives.

 

I looked at his #2 Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas Smitham and I find this bio:

Thomas Smitham currently serves as the Deputy Coordinator for Programs in the Bureau of International Information Programs. His most recent assignments were as Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and as Charge d’Affaires, U.S. Embassy Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. From 2008 to 2012, he served as chief of staff to the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment in the Department of State. Prior to returning to Washington, Tom headed the energy and environment unit at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels from 2005-2008. Just before his assignment in Brussels, he served as a Special Assistant in the office of the Under Secretary, covering Western Hemisphere issues. If I had to point a finger at the U S Embassy on Via Veneto I'm talking to this guy who goes back to Clinton.

In Washington, he focused on economic policy in the State Department as chief of staff to the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, the Department’s senior economic official. In Trinidad, Tom recently served as Charge d’Affaires, heading the U.S. Embassy in the southern Caribbean.
