If optics are important, then Pence being intentionally selected knowing he was crooked makes sense. The guy had all of us fooled, for the most part, and having Trump’s VP arrested (along with many top R’s) prevents the appearance of political targeting. (Only going after the Democrats.)

Seems like keeping the peace during the first few days of the shitstorm is the most vital objective. The Deep State’s dead man switch is a massive civil war that destroys America, and Trump has to (had to) thread the needle to prevent self-destruction and anarchy.
