Planes don't fly over Antarctica for logistical reasons. 90% of the world population lives in the Northern Hemisphere. There's no reason to fly due South to go east or west. Crossing the Arctic Circle, however, makes lots of sense. The Earth is a spheroid. Actually more ovoid/egg-shaped, but it ain't flat.
