Beijing likens Capitol storming to Hong Kong protests, hopes US can enjoy ‘peace, stability and security as soon as possible’

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has branded the “thugs, extremists and villains” who stormed the US Capitol Building on Wednesday a “disgrace,” adding that Beijing hopes Americans can experience stability in the near future.

Speaking on Thursday during a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying blasted the “thugs” involved in the violence on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and likened the unrest to the Hong Kong protests.

“Some people in the US reacted and used very different words to what happened in Hong Kong in 2019 and what is happening in the US today. This sharp contrast and the reasons behind it are thought-provoking,” Hua noted.

The spokeswoman also took to Twitter, posting a video reminding people of the protests which swept across the former British colony of Hong Kong two years ago.

The US and its Western partners have been critical of Beijing’s increasing influence over Hong Kong, and they have angered the Chinese government by supporting various protest movements in the Special Administrative Region.

Hua concluded by saying that China wishes for normality to be restored in the US. “We believe that the American people want safety and tranquility, especially in the severe situation of the current epidemic, we also hope that the American people can enjoy peace, stability and security as soon as possible,” she noted.

The events of Wednesday, when supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump breached the Capitol Building and staged an occupation, have been widely condemned around the world.

On Thursday, Trump promised “an orderly transition” to the administration of his successor Joe Biden, after US Congress certified the Democrat’s election victory.

Iraqi court issues ARREST WARRANT for Trump over killing of Soleimani & local militia leader

A court in Baghdad has asked that President Donald Trump be detained as part of an investigation into the assassination of a Shia militia chief who died in a US airstrike alongside Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

An investigative court in Baghdad’s al-Rusafa district “issued an arrest warrant” against “the outgoing President of the United States, Donald Trump,” Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement on its website.

The court is tasked with investigating the death of a powerful leader of Iranian-backed Shia militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The proceedings against Trump were launched in accordance with Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which deals with premeditated and aggravated murder, the statement said.

The Supreme Judicial Council said in late December that the court was studying video clips of Trump’s remarks pertaining to the case.

In January 2020, al-Muhandis was killed in a US airstrike near Baghdad’s airport along with Qassem Soleimani, who led the Quds Force, a unit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responsible for operations abroad.

US officials said that Soleimani and al-Muhandis, who was blacklisted by the US government in 2009, were conducting and plotting terrorist attacks against Americans in Iraq.

The killing instantly sparked major uproar in Tehran, as well as in Baghdad, especially among the Shia politicians, because militias led by al-Muhandis were fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

Shortly after the airstrike, Iraq’s parliament passed a non-binding resolution urging the government to expel US troops from the country and to close Iraqi airspace for American warplanes.

Flight attendants union calling for ban of pro-Trump rioters from flights

A flight attendants’ union is seeking to ban members of the pro-Trump mob which stormed the U.S. Capitol building Wednesday from flights out of Washington, D.C.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents nearly 50,000 flight attendants at 17 airlines, released a statement after chaos ensued on flights to the D.C. area in the days leading up to Wednesday’s riots.

“The mob mentality behavior that took place on several flights to the D.C. area yesterday was unacceptable and threatened the safety and security of every single person onboard. It will not happen again,” Sara Nelson, President of the Association said in a statement Wednesday.

“Some of the people who traveled in our planes yesterday participated in the insurrection at the Capitol today. Their violent and seditious actions at the Capitol today create further concern about their departure from the DC area. Acts against our democracy, our government, and the freedom we claim as Americans must disqualify these individuals from the freedom of flight,” she added.

Earlier this week, on a Delta Air Lines flight carrying Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, some passengers chanted “traitor” on board. Delta said it was aware of the incident and that “our crew quickly engaged and resolved the issue.”

On an American Airlines flight to Dulles International Airport in D.C., passengers shouted and cursed at each other, according to a video posted on Twitter.

The flight attendant unions called for zero tolerance for such incidents. Interfering with the duties of a flight crew member is against the law and unruly passengers can be fined $25,000.

American Airlines will not be selling alcohol on board flights to and from the Washington D.C. area and has increased staffing at D.C.-area airports, American spokesman Blessing said.

FBI solicits ‘tips’ on instigators of Capitol violence, gets bombarded with photos of GOP members, calls to probe Antifa & cops

Investigators at the FBI have asked the public for information on the instigators of violence at the US Capitol. If the public replies are any indication, agents will be sifting through hundreds of images of politicians.

Dozens of Trump supporters intruded into the Capitol on Wednesday, causing disruption to the US Congress’ count of the electoral votes cast in the presidential election. The FBI wants to know who sent the crowd through the police barricades, so it asked the public to help by “[submitting] any images, videos, or other multimedia files” related to the disturbance.

The responses came in droves, and most of them probably won’t be helpful for the investigation. Some were simply copies of publicly available footage and images of the chaotic scenes unfolding, with a special focus on the most colorful characters in the protester mob.

For the record, the individual in this photo is not named ‘Via Getty’, contrary to what some people on Twitter may believe.

Other commenters were as political as might be expected in a volatile situation like the one gripping the US. Images of Donald Trump, his cabinet, Republican lawmakers, and Rudy Giuliani were all popular submissions.

Some even helpfully provided the address where “the ringleader” lives.

Schumer Calls For Trump To Be Removed From Office Immediately

Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, and incoming Senate majority leader after the Dems victory in the Georgia runoffs, called for Donald Trump to be immediately removed from office, saying that the outgoing president was directly responsible for Wednesday's riot in the Capitol.

In a statement, Schumer said Vice President Mike Pence should invoke the Constitution’s 25th amendment, using support of the cabinet to take over in the Oval Office until Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20.

"What happened at the US Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president," said Schumer. "This president should not hold office one day longer."

“If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president,” Schumer added.

The quickest and most effective way—it can be done today—to remove this president from office would be for the Vice President to immediately invoke the 25th amendment.

The United States received a very small taste of its own medicine today as rioting Trump fanatics temporarily forced their way into the nation’s Capitol building, and now the whole nation is freaking out.

I am being generous when I say that America was given a very small taste of its own medicine; unlike the horrific coups and violent uprisings the US routinely orchestrates in noncompliant nations around the world, this one stood exactly zero chance of seizing control of the government, and only one person was killed.

I am also being generous when I say the rioters “forced their way” in; DC chose not to increase its police presence in preparation for the protests despite knowing that they were planned, and there’s footage of what appears to be cops actively letting them through a police barricade. There was some fighting between police and protesters, but contrasted with the unceasing barrage of police brutality footage which emerged from Black Lives Matter demonstrations a few months prior it’s fair to say the police response today was relatively gentle.

The New York Times has published two new articles titled “The storming of Capitol Hill was organized on social media” and “Violence on Capitol Hill Is a Day of Reckoning for Social Media”, both arguing for more heavy-handed restrictions on speech from Silicon Valley tech giants.

In the former, NYT’s Sheera Frenkel writes “the violence Wednesday was the result of online movements operating in closed social media networks where people believed the claims of voter fraud and of the election being stolen from Mr. Trump,” citing the expert analysis of think tank spinmeister Renee DiResta of “Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian asset” fame. As usual no mention is made of DiResta’s involvement in the New Knowledge scandal in which a Russian interference “false flag” was staged for an Alabama Senate race.

“These people are acting because they are convinced an election was stolen,” DiResta said.

“This is a demonstration of the very real-world impact of echo chambers.”

“This has been a striking repudiation of the idea that there is an online and an offline world and that what is said online is in some way kept online,” DiResta adds.

UK Labour Party launches campaign to tackle anti-vaccine disinformation

The UK Labour Party has launched a nationwide campaign to tackle anti-vaccine disinformation and encourage people to volunteer to help at health centres distributing the jab, in a bid to boost the numbers being inoculated.

The ‘Let’s Vaccinate Britain’ campaign aims to speed up the rollout of the jab in England, in a push to help the country meet its target of 14 million people receiving the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine before the middle of February.

Discussing the vaccine drive, which is supported by the Trades Union Congress, Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner sought to allay concerns about the inoculation, stating that “these vaccines have been robustly scrutinised and they are safe.”

It’s so important that the fake news and the disinformation that’s out there right now is dispelled - because it is very worrying for people.

In order to deliver on its goal, the NHS needs to be inoculating at least 2 million people a week. So far, the UK has only given 1.3 million people the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

In an attempt to accelerate the rollout of first doses, the UK has, against the advice of the vaccine’s joint makers Pfizer and BioNTech, decided to delay giving second doses, extending the period between jabs from 21 days to 12 weeks. Nearly 20,000 people have already received their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, the NHS said, before the government changed the dosing plan.

The campaign launch comes a day after the UK recorded its highest death toll since the first wave of the virus hit in April, with over 1,000 fatalities being reported by the government amid a surge in cases that has sent England into its third national lockdown.

Alongside their mission to combat disinformation, the Labour Party is urging the government to take advantage of the present lockdown in order to create a “round the clock” vaccination programme.

Facebook to ban and remove photos and videos from Capitol protest; content labeled as 'promotion of criminal activity'

Several Big Tech companies censored the president on social media

Facebook announced it would ban and remove photos and videos from the protest at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The social media platform claims that photos and videos from Wednesday's events violate Facebook's policy of "promotion of criminal activity."

Immediately following the Capitol protest, Facebook and Instagram locked the account of President Donald Trump for 24 hours for "two policy violations."

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube deleted videos from President Trump addressing the Capitol chaos, where he instructed his supporters to "go home," and declared that "we have to have peace." He also continued to press the narrative that the election was stolen from him.

Twitter released a statement on Wednesday that read, "In regard to the ongoing situation in Washington, D.C., we are working proactively to protect the health of the public conversation occurring on the service and will take action on any content that violates the Twitter rules."

Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of integrity, said the company deleted Trump's video over the risk that it would increase the risk of violence.

"This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump's video," Rosen wrote on Twitter. "We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence."

"The violent protests in the Capitol today are a disgrace," Facebook said in a statement on Wednesday. "We prohibit incitement and calls for violence on our platform. We are actively reviewing and removing any content that breaks these rules."

Facebook also issued its "response to the violence in Washington," where the social network announced it would ban and remove photos and videos from the Capitol protest.

"Let us speak for the leadership team in saying what so many of us are feeling," wrote Rosen and Monika Bickert, Facebook's vice president of global policy management. "We are appalled by the violence at the Capitol today. We are treating these events as an emergency."

Facebook proclaimed that it has been "searching for and removing" certain content, including "praise and support of the storming of the US Capitol," "incitement or encouragement of the events at the Capitol, including videos and photos from the protestors," and "calls for protests — even peaceful ones — if they violate the curfew in DC."

Facebook claimed that photos and videos of the Capitol protest "represent promotion of criminal activity which violates our policies."

Facebook also implemented "emergency measures," including "automatically disabling comments on posts in Groups that start to have a high rate of hate speech or content that incites violence" and "using AI to demote content that likely violates our policies."

"Facebook and Instagram have both begun blocking content posted to the #StormTheCapitol hashtag," TechCrunch reported.

The social media giant concluded by saying, "We're continuing to monitor the situation and will take additional measures if necessary to keep people safe."

Facebook did not enact a similar policy of banning images and videos during the protests and riots that have been occurring regularly since late May, following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.

Chinese Communist Party Strengthens Foreign Influence Ops Through ‘Overseas Students’

The Chinese Communist Party issued new guidelines for its United Front – the regime’s premier organization targeting Westerners to advance the “preferred policies” of the Chinese government – doubling down on its efforts.

The body, which the National Pulse recently revealed its efforts to co-opt American media outlets, elected officials, and think tanks, seeks to “co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition to the policies and authority of its ruling Chinese Communist Party” and “influence overseas Chinese communities, foreign governments, and other actors to take actions or adopt positions supportive of Beijing’s preferred policies” according to the U.S. government.

Its new guidelines, released January 5th, appear to double down on these efforts:

Mick Mulvaney Resigns from the Trump Administration: ‘I Can’t Stay Here’

Mick Mulvaney, special U.S. envoy to Northern Ireland and former chief of staff to President Trump, resigned from his position Thursday morning, reportedly telling Secretary of State Mike Pompeo he “can’t stay.”

Mulvaney is the latest to resign from the Trump administration following the protests that breached the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, forcing evacuations and lockdowns.

“Those who choose to stay, and I have talked with some of them, are choosing to stay because they’re worried the president might put someone worse in,” Mulvaney said, later adding Trump was “not the same as he was eight months ago.”

“We didn’t sign up for what you saw last night,” he explained. “We signed up for making America great again, we signed up for lower taxes and less regulation. The president has a long list of successes that we can be proud of.”

All of that “went away” on Wednesday, he added.

First lady Melania Trump’s Chief of Staff and Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisham, resigned from her post on Wednesday evening amid the protests, marking her status as the “first high-profile White House official to resign since the presidential election.”

Deputy National Security adviser Matt Pottinger has also resigned, and other resignations could be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, many lawmakers have placed the blame for Wednesday’s chaos solely on the president and are moving to draw up articles of impeachment:

Trump’s Deputy National Security Adviser Matt Pottinger Resigns

Deputy National Security adviser Matt Pottinger resigned Wednesday after President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the United States Capitol to protest the results of the 2020 election.

Matt Pottinger was a prominent force in the administration on the president’s aggressive stance against China and stood for Hong Kong’s protests for freedom.

Pottinger intended to resign on Election Day, according to Bloomberg News reporter Jennifer Jacobs who broke the news of his resignation, but he was convinced to stay by Trump’s National Security adviser Robert O’Brien.

Media reports included O’Brien on a list of Trump officials who were considering resigning after Trump supporters stormed the capitol to protest the election.

Other officials announcing their resignations included First Lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews, and White House social secretary, Rickie Nicet.

Farage: European Union’s Greed Is Helping Communist China ‘Take Over the World’

In response to the mass arrests of pro-democracy activists and politicians in Hong Kong, British politicians called on the European Union to abandon the investment pact it struck with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including Brexit leader Nigel Farage who said that “Brussels’ greed is helping the regime to take over the world.”

On Wednesday, 1,000 Hong Kong Police officers carried out raids across the city, arresting 53 activists and politicians for alleged ‘subversive behaviour’, which was criminalised by the Beijing-backed national security law in the former British colony last year.

In what has been characterised by the Hong Kong Free Press as the “largest national security round-up” since the introduction of the authoritarian legislation in June, activists and politicians were targeted for participating in the primary elections for the Legislative Council last July.

Brexit leader Nigel Farage condemned the police action as “another shocking crackdown on democratic opposition in Hong Kong”.

The last British governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, called on the EU to abandon the investment pact with the Chinese regime following the raids.

“If this deal goes ahead it will make a mockery of Europe’s ambitions to be taken seriously as a global political and economic player. It spits in the face of human rights and shows a delusional view of the Chinese Communist party’s trustworthiness on the international stage,” Lord Patten said.

Cancer Operations to be Postponed due to Coronavirus, UK Health Chief Warns

Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) may be forced to cancel cancer operations in response to the Chinese coronavirus, a top medical chief in the UK has warned.

The president of the Royal College of Surgeons, Professor Neil Mortensen said on Tuesday that NHS facilities across the country have already begun to suspend ‘low-priority’ medical procedures such as knee and hip replacements, but warned that in the coming weeks more serious procedures may have to be cancelled as well.

“We’re now concerned about operations like cancer surgeries being cancelled or postponed because there just isn’t the capacity to be able to manage them,” Prof Mortensen told Times Radio.

“I think if you have a delayed operation for cancer that may have an effect,” he noted.

“If you come in from a road traffic accident and you’re seriously ill, and you need to go to an intensive care unit afterwards and there is no intensive care unit, that’s going to have serious consequences,” he warned.

“My colleagues in London doing ward rounds, for example, report that there are problems with staff numbers on the wards, staff numbers in theatres. And then of course if you need to go to the intensive care unit, if the intensive care unit is full of Covid patients, there’s no room for you,” Mortensen said

The Professor of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Oxford Medical School went on to predict that it will likely be until the summer before NHS facilities will be able to return to a semblance of normality, after clearing the massive backlog of procedures.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the country would be heading back into a strict national lockdown, claiming that hospitals across England are some 40 per cent busier than at the peak of the first wave of the virus in April, with some 27,000 people presently being treated in hospital.

Lockdown Could Last Nearly Three Months, Despite Boris Suggesting End in Six Weeks

The duration of the third national lockdown appears to be getting longer by the day, after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that legislation would last until the end of March, despite expressing hope on Monday that measures would be lifted by mid-February.

On Monday, Prime Minister Johnson announced a lockdown across England, including stay-at-home orders and the closure of all schools. Mr Johnson would not commit to an end-date for the measures, suggesting only a soft deadline of mid-February –but only “if things go well”, in terms of suppressing the Chinese virus and rolling out the vaccines to the most vulnerable. Adding on a lag for achieving immunity after vaccination and relieving “the pressure on the NHS”, Johnson then tacked on a further two or three weeks, saying “we should remain cautious of the timetable ahead”.

On Tuesday morning, senior minister Michael Gove extended the possible timeline further, saying that “as we enter March we should be able to lift some of these restrictions, but not necessarily all”.

While on Wednesday, addressing MPs in the House of Commons set to vote on the legislation, Johnson confirmed that the new lockdown law would expire on March 31st, just before Easter, with Good Friday falling on April 2nd. Claiming that he did not believe lockdown would last the full length, the prime minister said: “As was the case last Spring, our emergence from the lockdown cocoon will not be a Big Bang, but a gradual unwrapping.

“That is why the legislation that this House will vote on later today runs until the 31st of March — not because we expect the full national lockdown to continue until then, but to allow a steady, controlled and evidence-led move down through the tiers on a regional basis.”

“These restrictions will be kept under continuous review, with a statutory requirement to review every two weeks and a legal obligation to remove them if they are no longer deemed necessary to limit the transmission of the virus.”

The lockdown could last the full three months, however, with a government source telling the Financial Times, according to a report by The Mirror: “Let’s be honest, it’s probably going to run till Easter.”

While another source said that Mr Johnson had told fellow Conservative MPs in a call that the situation will have improved by the end of “tulip season” (which begins in March and runs to May), or even “daffodil season” (early March to April).

During a press conference with the prime minister last night, England’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty said that even with the uptake of the vaccines against the Chinese coronavirus, there would not be a full lifting of restrictions in the near future, and that, in fact, the country may have to go back into lockdown again next winter.

Senators Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) and Ted Cruz (R., Texas), who led initial efforts to object to the Electoral College results, both voted in favor of the objections to Arizona’s and Pennsylvania’s electoral votes. The two were joined by Senators Hyde Smith (R., Miss.), Roger Marshall (R., Ka.), and Tommy Tuberville (R., Ala.).

John Kennedy (R., La.) voted only for the Arizona objection while Rick Scott (R., Fla.) and Cynthia Lummis (R., Wy.) voted only for the Pennsylvania objection.

The House and Senate on Wednesday night voted to strike down an objection raised against Arizona’s electoral votes after the process of confirming the result of the 2020 presidential election was delayed for several hours due to a siege on the Capitol building by supporters of President Donald Trump.

Senators voted 93-6 and the House voted 303-122 to reject the objection brought by Rep. Paul Gosar of Wyoming, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and other Republicans challenging Arizona’s electors and prompting Congress to retire to their respective chambers for debate.

Cruz and his fellow Republican Sens. Josh Hawley, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Roger Marshall, John Kennedy and Tommy Tuberville voted to sustain the objection.

SolarWinds fallout: DOJ says hackers accessed its Microsoft O365 email server

The US Department of Justice is one of the rare SolarWinds victims where hackers escalated the hack to a second phase and moved to access internal email inboxes, the agency said today.

The US Department of Justice confirmed today that the hackers behind the SolarWinds supply chain attack targeted its IT systems, where they escalated access from the trojanized SolarWinds Orion app to move across its internal network and access the email accounts of some of its employees.

"At this point, the number of potentially accessed O365 mailboxes appears limited to around 3-percent and we have no indication that any classified systems were impacted," DOJ spokesperson Marc Raimondi said in a short press release published earlier today.

With DOJ employee numbers estimated at around 100,000 to 115,000, the number of impacted DOJ employees is currently believed to be around 3,000 to 3,450.

The DOJ said it has now blocked the attacker's point of entry.

The DOJ now joins a long list of companies and government agencies that publicly admitted to having been impacted in the SolarWinds hack. Previous victims include the likes of:

The Department of Health's National Institutes of Health (NIH)

SolarWinds hack part of a Russian intelligence-gathering effort

The SolarWinds supply chain attack came to light on December 14 when Microsoft and FireEye confirmed that hackers gained access to the internal network of IT software company SolarWinds where they inserted malware inside multiple update packages for the Orion software inventory and IT monitoring platform.

Around 18,000 private companies and government organizations downloaded these trojanized Orion updates and were infected with a version of the Sunburst (Solorigate) backdoor trojan.

However, in a subsequent analysis published since the original attack, security firms and US cyber-security agencies investigating the hack said that hackers escalated the attack only on a few of the infected companies.

This escalation relied on deploying a second-phase malware strain named Teardrop, taking control of the local network, and then pivoting to gain access to the victim company's cloud and email infrastructure, with the purpose of gathering intelligence on the target's recent activities.

In a joint statement published yesterday, the FBI, CISA, ODNI, and the NSA attributed the SolarWinds supply chain attack to an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor, likely Russian in origin."

The four agencies described the entire SolarWinds operation as "an intelligence gathering effort," rather than an operation looking to destroy or cause mayhem among US IT infrastructure.

Last night CNN interviewed John Sullivan from Utah after the shooting death of Ashli Babbit by Capitol Hill police.

John Sullivan, a noted leftist leader from Utah, stormed the US Capitol with Trump supporters and others on Wednesday.

In August John Sullivan threatened to rip President Trump from the White House during violence in Washington DC. Sullivan was flown to DC for the protests.
