U.S. Capitol police deny reports officer died of injuries from in pro-Trump insurrection

U.S. Capitol police, in a statement released late Thursday, denied reports that one of its members died from injuries sustained during a violent pro-Trump rally.

“Media reports regarding the death of a United States Capitol Police (USCP) officer are not accurate. Although some officers were injured and hospitalized yesterday, no USCP officers have passed away,” the statement said.

“We ask that the officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected at this time. Should a statement become necessary, the Department will issue one at the appropriate time.”

Authorities confirmed the identities of the four people who died during or as a result of the riots Wednesday.

Ashli Babbitt, 35, of Huntington, Md., was shot and killed by a Capitol police officer as she tried to break through a door inside the building, officials confirmed.

The other three people participating in the D.C. riot — Benjamin Philips, 50, of Ringtown, Penn., Kevin Greeson, 55, of Athens, Al., and Roseanne Boyland, 34, of Kennesaw, Ga. — died of medical emergencies, Metropolitan Police Department Police Chief Robert Contee said during a press conference.

The 30-year police chief said authorities were not expecting violence from the mob that climbed the building’s facade, broke into offices, and smeared feces on the walls after storming the halls of Congress to block the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Sund’s lack of leadership in a critical moment that ended in four dead and hundreds injured was widely criticized by lawmakers.
