North Korea's parliament on Monday announced its decision to unify its time zone with South Korea’s starting May fifth.
The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party said on Monday that the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly has decided to adopt a decree on unifying the times of the two Koreas.
The paper said that the North Korean Cabinet and related ministries will take working-level steps to implement the decree.
The North's move follows its leader Kim Jong-un's surprise proposal to move its clock forward 30 minutes, back to the same time as in the South, during his summit with President Moon Jae-in on Friday.
The newspaper quoted Kim as saying during the summit that he felt sad to see two clocks hung on the wall of the Peace House, one for Seoul time and the other for Pyongyang time.
The North created its own "Pyongyang Time" by setting the clock 30 minutes behind the South in August 2015, claiming the move was aimed at removing the vestige of Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
