Scytl - ScyLight - related somehow? Probably a nothing-burger, but thought I'd post it anyways

ESA’s ScyLight (Secure and Laser communication technology) programme supports the research, development and evolution of optical communication – laser – technologies, and provides flight opportunities for their in-orbit verification.

They are also capable of carrying far larger amounts of data than the alternatives, which in today’s Big Data reality is of paramount importance for ‘future proof’ services.

The ESA says that its new laser communications network will create what it calls a “SpaceDataHighway,” able to transfer information such as photos and videos from Earth observation satellites, drones, and even from the International Space Station down to Earth at a near real-time speed of 1.8 Gigabits per second. This is 90 to 100 times faster than the speed of a home Internet connection, says the ESA.

At a ceremony held in Vatican City today, ESA and the Vatican Apostolic Library have agreed to continue their years-long cooperation on the preservation, management and exploitation of archived information.

The partnership between the two organizations follows a five-year effort to digitize the library’s collection using a special file format called Flexible Image Transport System (FITS), which was developed by NASA and ESA in the 1970s. FITS files allow for universal storage and accessibility, meaning that the files will not have to be reformatted to accommodate future technology.
