There's already seeral platforms that do this; most of them can communicate with each other now.

In the 2000's google, facebook, and twitter all could cross communicate with the xmpp protocol. Then they all shut the interfaceds off.

there are currently at least 10 distributed social networks now. The thing that has caused them to not be cross compatible iwth the big tech ones, is corporate policy.

Example: Mastodon and Gab no longer cross communicate.
