A bitcoin is a piece of digital information (token) that cannot be copied or faked. It however may be divided in smaller units (similar to how there are cents to a dollar, there are so called "satoshis" to a bitcoin). You can transfer the bitcoin across the internet or keep it stored on your computer (or a piece of paper if you like), and you may exchange the token for fiat money.
