I will make an analogy to microbial systems
in nearly ALL microbial systems (multiple microbes living "together") you have:
10% are universally beneficial to the group, they produce more than they extract from the group in a very basic accounting of energetic exchange
10% are universally detrimental to the group, they extract more than they produce for the group (or, more commonly, they produce more waste than they they clean from system with their own life cycle)
80% are essentially opportunistic
they will "act like" whichever group is currently dominating the system
