If Trump truly wants to determine who is loyal and who is merely an opportunist, then appearing to lose right before dropping the hammer makes a lot of sense.
The rats will have no time to walk back their positions. They will have no time to reestablish their loyalty. And we are now at a juncture where every public figure (not just in government) is being forced to take a side.
It's easy to snuggle up to Trump when he appears to be in full control (powerful) but what about when he seems to be on the ropes?
