Iran-Seized Tanker a 'Slap in Face' to South Korea for Refusing to Release Oil Money, Source Claims
Tehran authorities forced the Hankuk Chemi tanker, sailing under South Korean flag, to dock in Iran last week, suspecting the vessel of contaminating local waters. At the same time, the Islamic republic rejected accusations that it was holding the ship "hostage".
Iran's seizure of the South Korean-flagged Hankuk Chemi tanker was not a provocation aimed at the US, but rather a message to Seoul, an anonymous source - purportedly with ties to Iranian "hardline forces" - told Financial Times.
The main reason for the vessel's arrest was - according to the anonymous source - to force South Korea to release some $6 billion in payments for Iranian oil, which have long been frozen as a result of the US sanctions against the Islamic republic. The source also claimed that Tehran made the decision after lengthy talks with Seoul saw no change to the situation.

Up to 15,000 troops activated to protect Biden inauguration
Up to 15,000 National Guard troops have been authorized to support the Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington D.C. for President-elect Joe Biden, including assisting with security measures for the event.
On Monday, Gen. Daniel Hokanson, Chief of the National Guard Bureau said “We have received support requests from the Secret Service, Capitol Police, and Park Police, and have been authorized to provide up to 15,000 Guard members to meet current and future inauguration support requirements.
Hokanson said National Guard troops have thus far been requested to support security, logistics, liaison and communications missions in connection with the inauguration.

China says US will pay ‘heavy price’ over plan to send UN ambassador to Taiwan
China is threatening the U.S. will pay a “heavy price” after the U.S. announced U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft will travel to Taiwan to meet with Taiwanese counterparts.
In a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs press transcript from remarks Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said “China firmly opposes” the U.S. plan to send Craft to Taiwan.
“China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its own sovereign and security interests,” Hua said. “If the U.S. side insists on going its way, it will pay a heavy price for its wrong words and deeds.”
Hua’s reaction came after the U.S. Mission to the U.N. announced on Thursday that Craft would travel to Taipei to meet with senior Taiwanese officials from Jan. 13 to 15.

Iran will build new nuclear reactor: official
BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:00 A.M.) – The spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, Abul Fadl Amoui, announced that his country is working on designing a nuclear reactor similar to the Arak heavy water reactor.
“During today’s meeting of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, they discussed how to implement the Strategic Procedure Law to abolish the embargo and protect the rights of the people,” Amoui said in an interview with the Fars News Agency.
He continued, “This meeting was attended by the Assistant Head of the Atomic Energy Organization and Assistant Foreign Minister Behrouz Kamalandi, who gave an explanation on how to implement the various provisions of this law.”
“The Atomic Energy Organization is working at the present time, according to a timetable, to design a reactor similar to the Arak heavy water reactor, before making updates to it,” he said.
He added that Kamalandi confirmed during the meeting that the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear in its international contacts that the “strategic procedure to end the embargo” law had passed all its legal stages, stressing that “we will not allow foreign parties to violate this law.”
On Sunday, Iran revealed that it would increase its uranium enrichment, unless the United States ended its economic blockade and sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
