I am old enough to remember the mindset of 'law-abiding citizens'.
From farm plains of USA I remember when I grabbed a stick of licorice from the FiveNDime store at 5 years old. Penny candy was loose, open. Small farm town. Salt of the Earth Americans.
Mom marched me back in store with my half-ate, sticky licorice and turned me over to the manager. Big lecture. mom and manager agreed I would pay my penance by coming in Saturday morning to sweep the store floors and sidewalk for an hour. I was 5.
I am now grandma to a dozen little patriot anon kids and I have told them all the story of Granny's Licorice Caper!
And how I swept store floors for an hour. And how I spent the next 60 years never DREAMING of putting my hands on anything not mine.
