What you download is the router that makes the connection and the included browser. Router stuff is transparent, You'll see a connection window when the browser starts up, but don't have to do anything.
TOR network is similar to a VPN.
I don't often use TOR, but a clearnet through a VPN. I do things in different countries, so a VPN is worthwhile for me. If you want a straight answer from me, yes; not that expensive and every little bit helps.
