CDC Predicts 90,000 COVID Deaths In Next 3 Weeks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a dire warning about what is to come for the COVID-19 pandemic, according to its latest ensemble projections.

The agency believes that as many as 92,000 Americans will die from COVID-19 in the next three weeks despite the rollout of the vaccine. This represents a 25% increase in total COVID-related deaths, which have now topped over 384,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The CDC’s forecast also suggests that total COVID deaths will reach up to 477,000 by Feb. 6.

The agency has begun inoculations of both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines to frontline workers and residents of long-term care workers, then phasing to those 65 and older. However, doses of the drug have only reached 10.2 million doses to date.

The phased-in approach of the vaccine is rolling out slower than anticipated, missing the targets previously outlined under Operation Warp Speed of 20 million shots by the end of December, The New York Times reported.

Compounding the issue is the new strains of the virus that have cropped up across the U.S., causing concern, whether the vaccine will be effective against these variants. Experts have said they believe the COVID vaccine has efficacy against mutations of the virus, which has shown evidence of being more infectious.

But as the general public still waits for inoculations, experts warn that things will likely get worse before they start to get better in 2021, The New York Times reported.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said in an interview with NPR on Jan. 7, “We believe things will get worse as we get into January.”

Fauci attributed the rise in COVID cases to gatherings and travel during the holiday season.

Within the first weeks of January, the U.S. also saw the deadliest days of the pandemic. There were a record number of COVID deaths and positive cases of the virus. COVID-related hospitalizations were also up as more than 130,000 Americans are being treated for the virus, according to COVID Tracking Project.

In the first week of January alone, two people died every minute, Forbes said. To date, there have been over 23 million positive cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. and over 92 million worldwide, Johns Hopkins University reported.

Nightmarish Details Emerge on Irish Mother-Baby Homes Where 9,000 Infants Died

A government-commissioned report has uncovered some shocking revelations about the so-called “mother-baby” homes in Ireland. It’s believed that more than 9,000 infants died over the last several decades, mostly from neglect and abuse.

Most of the homes were run by the Catholic church, but similar stories were told about state-supported facilities. It’s a dark chapter in the history of this mostly Catholic, conservative country that the church kept hidden from the public.

The stigma of giving birth outside of marriage was so severe that the expectant mother was supposed to hide herself away in one of these mother-baby homes and was then pressured to give her child up for adoption. Since the babies couldn’t be placed right away, some of them spent a large part of their childhood in these homes.

Seattle Times:

The report, the culmination of a six-year investigation, detailed some 9,000 deaths of children at 14 of the country’s so-called mother and baby homes and four county homes over several decades, a mortality rate far higher than the rest of the population. The institutions, where unmarried women and girls were sent to give birth in secrecy and were pressured to give their children up for adoption, were also responsible for unethical vaccine trials and traumatic emotional abuse, the report found.

For decades, the stories of these places and the atrocities carried out in them were largely unspoken — despite calls from the mothers who became virtual prisoners within their walls and children who spent their earliest years there, later sharing stories of neglect and abuse.

The impetus for the investigation was created when the skeletal remains of 800 babies were found in an unmarked mass grave at a home run by nuns in the town of Tuam in County Galway. There had been rumors for decades about the horrific treatment of young, vulnerable women whose children were all but stolen from them after they gave birth.

It should be noted that the report spans the years from 1920-1998 — the last year the homes were open.

The report detailed how 56,000 unmarried mothers and about 57,000 children came through the homes investigated by the commission during a 76-year period. It attempted to differentiate between the earliest years of the home and those that came later.

“In the years before 1960 mother and baby homes did not save the lives of ‘illegitimate’ children; in fact, they appear to have significantly reduced their prospects of survival,” the report said, adding that the women and children “should not have been in the institutions” at all.

There have been dozens of stories of mothers desperate to find their lost children, One of them, Philomena Lee, wrote a book that was made into the 2013 film Philomena that garnered four Oscar nominations. It told Mrs. Lee’s story of her search for her son who nuns convinced her to give up and then sold to rich Americans, and the difficulties she had in tracking him.

She eventually discovered that he had died before she was able to reconnect with him.

There will be a reckoning of some kind for what happened to these women and children. The government has said it will apologize. Meanwhile, the Catholic church has remained silent on the entire matter.

The report starts closing this ugly chapter in Irish history. But the book is far from finished and to this day there are thousands of women who need to know where their children are and what’s happened to them.

Google ‘Experiment’ Hid Some News Sources from Consumers

Tech giant Google is under fire after it revealed that it blocked some Australian news sites from search results as part of an “experiment.” Critics call it a “chilling illustration” of the company’s stranglehold on internet search.

Business Insider reports that the Silicon Valley tech giant Google is facing major criticism after it was revealed that the company removed some local news content from its search results in Australia as part of an “experiment.” Critics have called the situation a “chilling illustration” of the power that Google holds over the internet.

The incident is the latest in an ongoing battle between Google and the Australian government, which is currently considering a proposal that would force tech firms such as Google and Facebook to pay local news providers for their content.

Google added a notice to its site last year after the law was proposed, warning that “the way Aussies search every day on Google is at risk.” The Silicon Valley giant said on Wednesday that it had been “running a few experiments that will each reach about 1% of Google Search users in Australia.”

The Australian Financial Review first reported that Google had tweaked its algorithm to bury links from major Australian news providers. Google confirmed the tweak and downplayed it, adding that it conducts “tens of thousands of experiments” every year.

Nine, the publisher behind the Sydney Morning Herald, told the Guardian in a statement: “Google is an effective monopoly and by withholding access to such timely, accurate and important information they show clearly how they impact what access Australians have to that. At the same time, Google are now demonstrating how easily they can make Australian news providers who fall out of their favour effectively disappear from the internet – a chilling illustration of their extraordinary market power.”

Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told reporters: “The digital giants should focus on paying for original content, not blocking it. That’s my message to those digital giants. We have again introduced legislation that’s now before a Senate committee to put in place a world-leading mandatory code to see those digital giants pay traditional news media businesses a fair sum of money for generating original content.”

A company spokesperson commented: “Every year we conduct tens of thousands of experiments in Google Search. We’re currently running a few experiments that will each reach about 1% of Google Search users in Australia to measure the impacts of news businesses and Google Search on each other. In 2018, the value we provided to publishers through referral traffic alone was estimated at $218 million dollars.”

Google reportedly plans to end the experiment in February.

Assault on the Capitol Has Let Loose the Electronic Octopus

Two days after the 2020 election, a defiant Kathy Griffin retweeted the notorious picture of her holding a prop that looked like the bloody head of a decapitated Donald Trump. Earlier last year, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, tweeted out a call to his followers to destroy Israel. Both tweets passed the censorship rules of Twitter’s 20-something judges in San Francisco.

In contrast, Trump has been banned for life from Twitter and barred indefinitely from Facebook. Twitter said in a statement it excluded Trump “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”

The president had called for thousands of his followers to assemble at a massive Washington, D.C., rally protesting the results of the election. Splinter groups broke off from the massed protesters. Some stormed into the halls of Congress. Social media platforms canceled Trump after he urged his followers, albeit “peacefully and patriotically,” to go protest at the U.S. Capitol, where the mayhem followed.

After the assault — and after Democrats won the presidency, kept the House, took the Senate and threatened to pack the Supreme Court — furor broke out against Trump. The outrage included the banning of Trump and some of his supporters from social media.

Thousands of scared social media users then retreated to the more conservative site Parler. But in near-unison, Google, Apple and Amazon removed Parler from their platforms.

Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri had his upcoming book — a call to clamp down on Big Tech monopolies — abruptly canceled by publisher Simon & Schuster. Hawley’s crime was apparently his quixotic persistence in questioning the authenticity of the 2020 election.

What are the new standards that now get a book or a social media account canceled?

After all, the Vicki Osterweil book “In Defense of Looting,” a justification for theft and property destruction, came out last summer amidst the antifa and Black Lives Matter unrest. The author was even featured on National Public Radio in a largely sympathetic interview.

Is Madonna banned from social media? Shortly after the 2017 inauguration, she voiced a desire to blow up the White House with the Trump family in it.

Is AK-47-toting rapper Raz Simone banned from social media? He took over a swath of downtown Seattle last June and declared it an autonomous zone. For weeks, his armed guards reigned supreme without worry of police. There were at least four shootings and two deaths in or around Simone’s kingdom. He was neither prosecuted nor deplatformed from social media. The lyrics of his song “Shoot at Everyone” are full of allusions to violence, racial slurs and stereotypes. The song is posted on YouTube, and Simone still enjoys a large social media presence.

So, why did Big Tech, the media, the publishing industry, a host of corporations and a growing number of campuses double down on censoring some free speech? Why now blacklist, censor and cancel thousands of people?

True, Trump gave them an opening when some rogue supporters vandalized the Capitol. But the real reason is that the left has long been eager to curtail the speech of those it opposes. Last week simply offered members of the left the sort of perfect crisis that they determined should never go to waste.

Apple Launches ‘Racial Equity and Justice’ Projects to Challenge ‘Systemic Racism’

Apple says that it will invest $60 million to support minority entrepreneurs, a move that comes as part of a “racial equity and justice” project to challenge “systemic racism.”

“There’s a lack of diversity among venture capital and banking funders,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, to Reuters. “We looked for where we thought there was opportunity for our resources to do good things.”

The report added that Apple will invest $10 million in a fund with Harlem Capital, a New York-based early-stage venture firm, and another $25 million in Siebert Williams Shank’s Clear Vision Impact Fund, which provides financing to businesses with an emphasis on minority-owned firms.

Apple is also investing another $25 million into the Propel Center, a facility in Atlanta where historically Black colleges and universities will collaborate on programs in entrepreneurship, and app development.

Apple’s new investments are a part of the company’s $100 million “Racial Equity Justice Initiative,” a project that was announced last June, after the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.

The initiative seeks “to help dismantle systemic barriers to opportunity and combat injustices faced by communities of color,” according to Apple.

The company also plans to establish an app development academy in Detroit, Michigan, with Michigan State University. The academy will provide a free 10-to-12-month course and will seek to teach 1,000 students skills in coding, design, and marketing every year.

“We wanted to see more Black and brown developers,” said Jackson. “They tend to be focusing on the southeastern part of the United States. But Detroit has over 50,000 small businesses that are owned by Black and brown people.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook added that “we are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world — and these new projects send a clear signal of Apple’s enduring commitment.”

Cook added that Apple is launching the Racial Equity Justice Initiative to “empower communities that have borne the brunt of racism and discrimination for far too long.”

“We are honored to help bring this vision to bear, and to match our words and actions to the values of equity and inclusion we have always prized at Apple,” said Cook.

While Apple works to prop up other businesses, the company has provided obstacles for others. Last week, Apple banned Parler, an alternative to Twitter, from its app store, effectively excluding the Parler app from all iPhones, after President Donald Trump was banned from Twitter.

Apple justifies its decision by claiming that words on the platform may “incite violence,” a narrative that big tech companies are now using to take action against the president, political dissenters, and their competition — while seemingly ignoring Twitter, where “Hang Mike Pence” was trending just last week.

New Jersey Government Seizes $165,000 from Atilis Gym’s Bank Account — 100% of Gym’s Assets for ‘Crime’ of Remaining Open

Ian Smith is the co-owner of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey. In May Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey reopened in defiance of Governor Phil Murphy’s Coronavirus lockdown order.

In July a swarm of police officers burst through the door of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey Monday morning and arrested the owners for violating Governor Murphy’s authoritarian shutdown order.

Since that time Ian Smith and Atilis Gym have been harassed and fined by state authorities for opening their business. They currently have several lawsuits pending in court.

On Wednesday, New Jersey officials Ian Smith announced that Governor Murphy and state officials seized 100% of their assets. The state took $165,000 from Ian Smith and Atilis Gym bank account.

This is tyranny.

From Ian Smith’s Instagram page.

Governor Phil Murphy seized 100% of our assets today – $165k, all of which came from donations and apparel sales. This is done in the middle of ongoing litigation defending ourselves against these fines, our 80 charges, the revocation of our business license, and the unconstitutional health department shutdown.⁣

This was never about protection, it was always about control. ⁣

Please continue to support us in any way possible. There is a link to our GoFundMe in my bio and a link to our apparel store. Please share as much as you possibly can this story and help us continue our fight. ⁣

We also passed 105k visits to the facility today and still have no reported outbreaks. Weird. ⁣

We love you guys. Thank you.

Gretchen Whitmer Extends Michigan Restaurant Lockdown as ‘Three Week Pause’ Reaches 12 and Counting

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) extended her lockdown of Michigan restaurants Wednesday as her original “three week pause” stretched into a twelfth week.

Whitmer relaxed previous orders banning group exercise classes and non-contact sports, but extended the mandated closure of in-person dining at restaurants and bars until at least February 1.

“The efforts we have made together to protect our families, frontline workers and small business owners are working,” Whitmer said, NBC 6 reported.

The original “pause” was announced in November and the extension was the third such one.

“While there has been a slight uptick in our percent positivity rate, our cases per million have plateaued and more hospital beds are becoming available. Today, we are confident that MDHHS [Michigan Department of Health and Human Services] can lift some of the protocols that were previously in place,” she said.

“We are reopening cautiously because caution is working to save lives,” MDHHS Director Robert Gordon told reporters.

“The new order allows group exercise and non-contact sports, always with masks and social distancing, because in the winter it’s not as easy to get out and exercise and physical activity is important for physical and mental health,” he said.

“We are glad that we made it through the holidays without a big increase in numbers, but there are also worrying signs in the new numbers,” Gordon said.

The Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA), meanwhile, blasted Whitmer for the ongoing lockout.

“The governor’s continuation of this pause without a plan — now expanding to 75 days — is without parallel in the nation in terms of its unwillingness or inability to provide leadership to a decimated industry and its workforce,” MRLA President and CEO Justin Winslow said in a statement.

“There are more than 100,000 unemployed hospitality workers and thousands of small operators on the edge of bankruptcy all waiting for hope and direction, and once again it did not come. This is unacceptable and we should all demand more accountability,” he said.

Winslow added, “Michigan stands alone as the only remaining statewide closure of dining rooms without a discernible, data-driven path to reopen and fully reintegrate in the economy.”

According to the MRLA, Michigan’s hospitality job losses are double the national average.

“Michigan has not prioritized vaccination for the hospitality industry, unlike most states that have similarly poor hospitality job loss,” the group said.

Winslow argued Michigan has met all three metrics established by MDHHS to reopen, including declining daily case rates, hospitalizations, and percent positivity.

Whitmer’s latest orders run through January 31.

Four GOP Lawmakers DID NOT VOTE on Impeachment — Along with the 10 Turncoats Who Voted to Impeach Trump

On Wednesday the US House voted to impeach Trump in a dishonest slapdash process where they waived rules so leftists could smear and label the president a racist and white supremacist during the proceedings.

The final vote was: 232 to 197.

Nine Republicans joined Liz Cheney in voting to impeach President Trump over calling for violence that was completely fabricated.

What did not make any headlines is that FOUR Republicans refused to stand with President Trump and vote against the impeachment:

Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas)

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Maryland)

Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC)

Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL)

President Trump’s Executive Order from Yesterday Directly Impacts the Biden’s Investments in China

President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) yesterday was sent to Speaker Pelosi while she was busy impeaching the President again on false and shoddy charges. The EO appears directed at the Biden’s and any Americans working with the Chinese to enhance the Chinese military.

President Trump on Monday issued an Executive Order that prohibits US Securities Investments That Finance Communist Chinese Military Companies. Then yesterday the President sent an email directly to Speaker Pelosi regarding this same EO (#13959). In his email the President shared that the EO includes the trade of public securities related to China but also derivatives related to these securities:

It is unclear why the President sent this email directly to Speaker Pelosi. Is she involved in investments with China? Maybe this is a requirement of the law or maybe he was trying to point something out to her?

What does seem clear though is that Hunter Biden’s security firm in China is likely affected by this law. Red State reported in October 2020:

With as concerned as the left has been about a bank account Trump has in China, perhaps they should pay a bit more attention to the fact that Hunter Biden and the stepson of then-Secretary of State John Kerry were operating a venture capital firm with Chinese State-Owned Entities like the Bank of China?

Heinz left the partnership when Hunter and Archer joined the Burisma board, but Hunter still owns 10 percent of BHR through his investment firm, Skaneateles LLC. His share is conservatively valued at $50 million, according to the report.

More than 50% of BHR is owned by the Bank of China (BOC Below):

WARNING: FBI planning fake false flag “armed protests” that will be blamed on conservatives and used to go after gun rights

Another round of “armed protests” is about to be unleashed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which after seeing the success of the Capitol false flag “siege” is planning to deliver the final death blow to the Constitution in the days leading up to Inauguration Day.

The deep state agency, which has an extensive history of staging false flag “terror” events to chip away at Americans’ rights and freedoms, has issued an official warning about “armed protests” at all 50 state capitals, as well as in Washington, D.C., that aim to stop Joe Biden’s “inauguration.”

An FBI bulletin sets the narrative by pegging “extremist groups” as the pre-crime culprits, reinforcing the fake news lie that “conservatives” and “Trump supporters” are planning to wage full-scale “insurrection” against the supposedly incoming Biden regime.

“Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the U.S. Capitol from 17 January through 20 January,” the bulletin reads, according to an unnamed official who reportedly spoke to the Associated Press (AP) on condition of anonymity.

FBI warned about Capitol false flag “siege” before it happened, too

take our poll - story continues below

The FBI issued a similar bulletin on Dec. 29, roughly a week before the Capitol false flag “siege,” that contained similar warnings. The deep state agency told the world what was going to happen before it happened because the FBI was behind it, just as it will be behind the upcoming “armed protests.”

The mainstream media is reporting the latest FBI bulletin as if it was “intelligence.” However, it is obvious, based on the FBI’s history of staging false flag events, that this is not so much intelligence as it is a warning and a threat about what is coming.

The Six Lowest Points of Trump’s Corrupt, Racist, Impeached, Ignorant, Incompetent Clusterfuck of a Presidency

As Trump’s chaotic, subversive term comes to a long-overdue close, here are six signature moments that define America’s worst president ever

As the Trump Era draws to a chaotic, subversive and long-overdue close, it is difficult to look back at it and pick those moments that best define it. Frankly, it is difficult to look back at it at all. But to spare you the effort, I will try.

It is difficult to select just a few signature Trumpian moments, because America’s outgoing leader holds so many (dubious) distinctions.

Zionists Pass the Baton to Communists

Sheldon Adelson' death Jan 11 coincides exactly with efforts at total public humiliation of Trump, and new media undermining Netanyahu's position in Israel. The Jewish-American billionaire and biggest financial backer of both Donald Trump and Bibi Netanyahu.

trio.jpg

A radical shift in elite strategy is unfolding with the George Soros globalists [Communists] consolidating victory over the nationalist [Zionist] strategy, in which Adelson, Trump and Netanyahu were all key players.

The 2020 game changer was the covid hysteria and social control via allegedly 'science-backed' lockdowns. Covid-19 has succeeded better than any other elite deception. White conservatives no longer need to be considered or placated.

So elites are moving to quickly crush patriotic sentiments, and remove any means by which independent thinking can prosper. Trump is being humiliated to try to demoralize his voters, and indeed all those who identify with their European-heritage.

Covid-19 taught the elites that no matter the credentials of dissident scientists and doctors … the truth is mostly sidelined via media control.

So the hypocrisy of denouncing Trump for 'sedition' for his inspiring the 6 January 2021 US Capitol rioters … Media simply ignores the much bigger riots attacking government installations after George Floyd's death on 25 May. Of course Floyd's death is far more important than the theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American people.

dc-fire.jpg

In those riots attacking the White House itself - equally 'the heart of American democracy' - 60 Secret Service agents were injured as they tried to protect public officials and property. Much of Washington DC was on fire.

SUDDENLY THE MEDIA IS "CRITICAL" OF ISRAEL

And in the Middle East, the day after Sheldon Adelson died, no less than the ultra-establishment Associated Press, now as well labels Israel an 'apartheid state', implicitly savaging the more nationalist policies of Netanyahu, in favour of more globalist-friendly, Palestinian-including policies of George Soros, the AP suddenly unafraid to use the 'anti-semitic trope' word 'apartheid'.

Israeli Jews themselves have been swept up in the covid mania, Israel boasting of 'leading the world' in vaccinations. As nationalist Jews like the late Barry Chamish warned, Israel itself would one day also, like the USA, fall to the pressures of the globalist New World Order.

One can expect Netanyahu's legal troubles to escalate rapidly. Some new concoction of 'Middle East peace' will appear. 'Greater Israel' will include those Muslims who 'collaborate in peace' with a Jewish-led globalist agenda.

HS principal on leave after comparing social media speech crackdowns to 'McCarthyism' in video message to students

'There have been times even in American history where a small group of people decided what you could hear'

The principal of a Tennessee high school is on paid administrative leave after comparing social media's speech crackdowns to "McCarthyism" during a homeroom video message to students.

What are the details?

During his nine-minute address Monday, principal Barton Thorne of Cordova High School, near Memphis, said freedom of speech is being threatened by social media and tech companies, the Commercial Appeal reported.

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have all banned President Donald Trump — along with thousands of other users — in the wake of last week's U.S. Capitol riot.

WREG-TV said it obtained audio of Thorne's remarks to students during which he criticized the riot as well as the behavior of social media.

"It's what's going on with Twitter and Facebook and Google and Apple and their decision as private companies to filter and to decide what … you hear and know about," Thorne said, according to the station.

Thorne stressed that his comments weren't about Trump but about freedom of speech, WREG reported.

"Because there have been times even in American history where a small group of people decided what you could hear. You think about McCarthyism," he said, according the station. "If you don't know about that, you can Google that or talk to your social studies teacher."

Thorne also offered broad comparisons to 1990s federal standoffs in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and in Waco, Texas, by Branch Davidians and David Koresh, the Commercial Appeal reported.

Thorne also told students that "a marketplace of free exchange of ideas" is at stake, the paper added, and that the lack of social media accountability and regulation "should be very chilling for you, that should be very frightening for you."

He did denounce the U.S. Capitol siege, calling it "ignorance at the highest level. I don't know of too many people that are going to be okay with what happened. I don't care what side you agree with, we don't practice sedition, we don't attack our legislature," the Commerical Appeal noted.

How did the school district react?

Officials of Shelby County Schools are reviewing Thorne's comments, WREG said.

"To my understanding it was a recording that was shared on our virtual platforms," Jerrica Phillips, the district's chief of communications, told the station. Phillips added to the station that she'll "have to learn more about whether or not it was an opening school message or how exactly it went out or what time of day."

WREG said Thorne's comments come at a time when SCS is working to help staff know the right way and wrong way to address politics and other issues.

"Emotionally charged situations, we have to sometimes temper back, recalibrate, think about the message we're sending to our student," Michael Lowe of the SCS Office of Equity and Access told the station. "Because Cordova is like the City of Memphis; it's made up of a salad bowl of many different students of all areas of Memphis."

District board member Sheleah Harris said the allegations are "extremely unfortunate and do not reflect the true value of" the school or the district, the Commercial Appeal reported.

"With the horrific events from last week at our U.S. Capitol, we have to ensure our children, teachers, and school staff remain in a consistent environment that promotes safety, cultural sensitivity, and represents the highest level of excellence," Harris added in a statement to the paper. "As leaders, we must be intentional about creating spaces for our students to discuss and process events that take place in our country and community."

Anything else?

The Commercial Appeal reported that Thorne on Wednesday said "individuals who are inciting violence should be removed" and that a supervisor asked him to not speak at length to the media about his speech to students and the district's investigation.

Here's What Joe Biden May Announce Tonight, According To Goldman

President-elect Biden is scheduled to speak at 7:15pm tonight to outline his “vaccination and economic rescue legislative package”. As we noted late last night, there are a number of media reports regarding the potential size and details of that package, which vary considerably, even though the market's attention was drawn to the largest one for obvious reasons. Fox example, the Washington Post reported the package could cost “more than $1 trillion”; Reuters said it “could exceed $1.5 trillion”; CNN reports it could be “roughly $2 trillion”, and Bloomberg reported that “Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has pressed President-elect Joe Biden to propose more than $1.3 trillion”. Talk about multiple trial balloons.

However, as Goldman's chief political economist Alec Phillips writes in his preview of Biden's speech tonight, whatever the president-elect proposes, Congress will determine the outcome and it is likely to differ in several respects. How much it differs will depend on the views of centrist Democrats in the House and Senate whose support will be needed, as well as whether Biden intends to rely on Republican support in addition to Democratic votes.

Several reports suggest that Biden will seek bipartisan support for his package and hopes to pass it with at least 60 votes in the Senate, rather than moving it through the “reconciliation” process with only a simple majority. This is not surprising, but as Phillips notes, "it is hard to square a bipartisan approach with some of the large figures noted above, which we would not expect many Republicans to support." Indeed, it is not clear that all Democrats would support a near-term relief bill costing $2 trillion.

That said, as the Goldman strategist warns, "seeking bipartisan support for the proposal is not the same as actually passing it with bipartisan support." After seeking Republican support, congressional Democrats could move on to a second strategy relying on entirely (or almost entirely) Democratic votes, if necessary. These two tracks could even move in parallel, with congressional Democratic leaders attempting to win bipartisan support at the same time that the House and Senate Budget Committees prepare budget resolutions that include “reconciliation” instructions that would allow stimulus legislation to pass with only 51 votes in the Senate.

Goldman's current assumption is that Congress will enact a near-term COVID-relief package costing $750bn, although risks are clearly skewing toward a (much) higher cost. As shown in the table below, the largest gaps between the October 2020 Democratic proposal and what Congress passed in December are state and local fiscal aid, education grants, stimulus payments and an expansion of the child tax credit, and unemployment insurance. These are generally the areas where the next round of fiscal measures will focus.
