Gov. Gavin Newsom has called in the National Guard for the state Capitol in Sacramento in preparation for Inauguration Day next Wednesday.

The governor signed a general order authorizing the deployment of 1,000 National Guard personnel on Thursday.

“In light of events in our nation’s capital last week, California is taking important steps to protect public safety at the State Capitol, and across the state,” Newsom said in a press release. “Our State Operations Center is actively working with federal, state and local law enforcement partners in assessing threats and sharing intelligence and information to ensure those disgraceful actions are not repeated here.”
Earlier in the week, the FBI issued a warning that armed protests were planned at all 50 state capitol buildings around the country on inauguration week.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg also shared a post on Facebook Wednesday saying that there would be a large law enforcement presence at the Capitol this week.
He also asked residents to “please steer clear of the State Capitol and surrounding areas” for the upcoming week.
