‘Didn’t they have backup?’ UK accidentally wipes 150,000 arrest records in major security blunder

Some 150,000 records stored in UK police databases have been deleted due to a computer bug in an embarrassing development for the nation that supposedly took back control after finally parting ways with the EU.

The details of the blunder were first reported by the Times on Friday. The glitch affected the Police National Computer (PNC), the law enforcement database that stores millions of records of individuals, vehicles and crime evidence and allows various government agencies real-time cross checks.

According to the report, a weekly “weeding” session to expunge outdated data ended up with more than 150,000 records accidentally deleted. It happened due to a technical issue and not an intentional attack. Police databases of DNA and fingerprints connected to the PNC were also affected, the Times sources said.

The Home Office confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the issue “related to people arrested and released where no further action had been taken, and no records of criminal or dangerous persons have been deleted.”

The newspaper said the situation should not be downplayed. Some criminals could be released due to a lack of evidence and busted at a later point in time after biometric evidence links them to another crime scene. So the loss of records means that “offenders might go free”, the Times worried. While one of its sources even described the blunder as “potentially catastrophic”.

The deletion of the records has already caused problems for the UK’s visa issuance process. For two days, applications could not be checked against the PNC as the Home Office was scrambling to tackle the issue.

Ugandan President Museveni Blasts U.S. Deep State And Fake News Media

Museveni is running as socially conservative law-and-order candidate in Uganda presidential election

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has blasted the deep state and the fake news media during an interview with NPR ahead of the country’s presidential election.

Museveni, a social conservative, is running for re-election against liberal candidate Bobi Wine.

Although he has served as a close ally of the United States while in office, Museveni expressed dismay that the U.S. deep state appeared to be funding riots in the guise of “peaceful protests”, which were aimed at ousting him from office in a color revolution.

“[Protesters] were attacking other people, because they have been told that they should cause an uprising here like happened in Libya, like happened in Syria… so they are [American] agents,” he told NPR.

“They are no longer part of a protest movement. They are now agents of foreign schemes, here.”

Museveni had previously described Wine as an “agent of foreign interests” and closely aligned with the pro-homosexual lobby. In contrast, Museveni has emphasized a patriotic, Uganda-first agenda, and a strong stance against homosexuality. He has also been credited with a recent era of economic prosperity in Uganda.

He added that although he believed in the right to protest, the rioters’ attacks on police, civilians and property meant a strong response was necessary.

“According to the police procedures, if people are protesting, there is a way you handle it — but if now they overrun — overrun, for instance, a police station — you will have to stop it by using lethal fire,” he said. “Rioting and attacking civilians and attacking property, it is something that we cannot accept.”

He then pointed that although there were several other candidates running for President, Wine was the only one who had been arrested, because Wine had himself been involved in rioting.”He’s not been arrested for putting forward ideas. He’s being arrested for rioting and causing danger to other people,” Museveni declared.

“That’s why he’s been arrested, but there are other opposition leaders who are not being arrested. Why, why him? There are other opposition leaders who have never even seen a police station, but these ones whom you are talking about, they want to use violence to influence people, and that one our society cannot allow.”

He went on to state that he was motivated to run for re-election to improve the lackluster work ethic of Ugandans, claiming that “fools can survive” in Uganda as they do not face the same pressures from “competition between man and man” or “the environment” as in other parts of the world.

Museveni concluded the interview by blasting the fake news media, describing them as “arrogant ignoramuses”.

“We are committed to the freedom of the press, but see, the press, especially the Western press, is arrogant,” he said.

“You don’t want to learn; you know it all. Then you come on and impose your ignorance on our society. So that’s the problem we are having. How can we continue dealing with these arrogant ignoramuses? So if they change their attitude from arrogance to inquisitiveness and investigation, I’m very happy.”

Prime Minister of Poland Vows to Stop Big Tech Censoring ‘Those Who Think Differently’

Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki has vowed to “defend freedom of speech on the internet” and insisted “the owners of social media networks cannot operate above the law” after U.S. President Donald Trump and Parler were purged.

“I was born and raised among people for whom freedom was the most precious of values… because we know what it is like when someone tries to limit it,” said the 52-year-old conservative, who was born in the same year the Soviet communists and puppet regimes in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland itself invaded the wayward satellite state of Czechoslovakia to crush the Prague Spring.

“For close to 50 years we lived in a country in which censorship was practised, in which Big Brother told us how we are meant to live and what we are meant to feel, and what we are not allowed to think, say or write,” wrote Morawiecki on his Facebook page, going on to praise the internet as “the most democratic medium in history, a forum on which everyone can have a voice”.

Nevertheless, he warned, the internet’s lack of regulation has, paradoxically, had “negative consequences” for freedom over time: “It became dominated by huge, international corporations, wealthier and more powerful than many nations.”

“These corporations treat our online activity merely as a source of revenue and a tool to increase their global domination. They have also introduced their own standards of political correctness, and they fight those who oppose them,” wrote Morawiecki.

“We are now increasingly faced with practices we believed were left in the past. The censoring of free speech, once the domain of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, is now back, but in a new form, run by corporations, who silence those who think differently,” he lamented.

The Polish leader insisted that there can be “No tolerance for state censorship, such as the one Poland faced under communism, or the private type, which we are seeing today.”

“Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy — that is why we must defend it. It is not up to algorithms or the owners of huge corporations to decide what opinions are correct and which aren’t.”

The Polish prime minister promised that his government would “do everything to define the frame of operations of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other similar platforms” with respect to free speech.

“In Poland we will regulate with appropriate national regulation. We will also suggest similar laws be passed in all of the EU,” he added.

“Social media platforms have to serve us, and not the interests of their powerful owners. Everyone has the right to freedom of speech. Poland will defend that right.”

Ministers in Morawiecki’s government have previously explained that the regulations will take the form of an ‘Act for the Freedom to Express One’s Views and Obtain and Disseminate Information on the Internet’, giving social media users a statutory right to appeal bans and content removal to tech giants — with the possibility of further, all-digital, and anonymised appeals to a new Court for the Protection of Freedom of Speech.

The court will be able to order social media platforms to restore banned users or their posts if their words were lawful under the Polish constitution, with multi-million dollar fines for firms which refuse its rulings or fail to address them in a timely fashion.

“The Constitution… guarantees full freedom of expression… Therefore, any manifestations of limiting it must meet with the reaction of the state to enable protection against interference with this freedom,” explained deputy justice minister Sebastian Kaleta.

“The Left tries to define any fundamental criticism of its views or ideology as ‘hate speech’, and then expects such content to be censored or even punished… This law is a response to what they are trying to impose on us as legal norms, that is, forcing us to censor with political correctness and refrain from expressing one’s opinion,” Kaleta added.

Apple CEO Cook: We Suspended Parler Because ‘Incitement to Violence’ Is Not Free Speech

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a preview clip from his upcoming interview on “Fox News Sunday” that Apple suspended the conservative social media platform Parler from the App Store last week because “free speech and incitement to violence” do not have “an intersection.”

Anchor Chris Wallace asked, “How did you decide to balance free speech with objectionable content?”

Cook said, “We looked at the incitement of violence that was on there. We don’t consider that free speech and incitement to violence has an intersection.”

Wallace asked, “What about the argument that by taking Parler off Apple in addition to what other companies are doing that you are just driving these people, these views further underground?”

Cook said, “We have only suspended them, Chris. So if they get their moderation together, they would be back on there.”

UK Police Chief: ‘Now Is Really Not the Time’ for Freedom of Speech, Right to Assembly

The chief constable of Dorset Police has urged lockdown protesters to accept that “now is really not the time” for freedom of speech and the right to assembly.

Chief Constable James Vaughan was speaking after the controversial arrest of two women for, seemingly, being recorded leaving home more than once and “sitting on a bench”, in an incident the police now allege was “stage-managed” by lockdown protesters, as one of the women is a Covid sceptic — although she denies any pre-planning.

“We appealed to them [the protesters] last weekend to say: ‘Look guys, we respect your right to freedom of speech and right to assembly but now is really not the time, it is too dangerous. Please don’t come, we have got other things we need to do,'” said the chief constable in comments to The Telegraph.

“Instead of giving us a break this weekend they decided to change their tactics and it just smacks of civil disobedience, really,” he complained, saying that he was “a bit angry and frustrated with these protesters on Saturday” and claiming that his officers “were acting with utter courtesy and restraint”.

Chief Constable Vaughan’s zero-tolerance attitude towards protesters differs markedly from that shown by British police leaders towards Black Lives Matter activists, who have been allowed to break lockdown rules largely unmolested throughout the pandemic — in part, London Police Commissioner Cressida Dick admitted in June, because officers are afraid to enforce the law against them.

Incredibly, Chief Constable Vaughan seemed to admit the apparent double standard was an issue, and that the perhaps over-zealous enforcement of lockdown regulations against easier targets might be an issue — one causing damage to the public’s relationship with the police.

“I think we have taken some shrapnel to be fair. When you look at drones in the Peak District, 90-year-olds being arrested, women walking their dogs getting fined… you have those who say: ‘Nobody seemed to be bothered about Black Lives Matter or Extinction Rebellion protests or statues being thrown in the river,'” he confessed.

“The other extreme is that you are not doing enough and we are caught between the two really in terms of half the population seem to want us to take a very robust stance and the other half want us to take a proportionate stance so that is always the difficulty,” he complained.

Vaughan also took the slightly unusual step of almost openly criticising Boris Johnson’s government over how its lockdown should be enforced, with the police having made a number of missteps with respect to punishing people for leaving their home for exercise, which is allowed but only within vaguely-defined limits.

“I don’t know what the rationale and thinking is in Government around why they have not been more prescriptive with travel guidance,” he said.

“It has been a bit tricky through all three lockdowns. It would probably be better if they said: ‘Look, you can exercise every day but stay local – and unless there are exceptional circumstances we don’t expect you to be travelling a couple of miles from your house.’

“We seem to have said ‘stay local’ and that means your village, your town, your part of the city, but it is a bit vague and it leaves it open to abuse.”

Mexico Drops Drug Case on Fmr. Secretary of Defense After Forcing Release from U.S.

Mexico’s government will not prosecute the former secretary of defense who was arrested by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration before being sent home. Mexican diplomats threatened the futures of various bilateral border security arrangements to secure his release.

On Thursday evening, Mexico’s’ Attorney General’s Office (FGR) announced it will not prosecute General Salvador Cienfuegos, the nation’s former secretary of defense, on drug trafficking and illicit moneymaking charges.

U.S. federal agents arrested Cienfuegos aka “El Padrino” or “The Godfather” on October 15, 2020, as he landed in California for vacation. He was transferred to New York where he was temporarily held without bond until his release. Court documents filed by U.S. prosecutors claim Cienfuegos was a close ally of the Beltran Leyva Cartel (“H-2”); helped move drugs; and leaked sensitive information in exchange for hefty bribes.

After the arrest, Mexico City exerted extreme political and diplomatic pressure on the U.S. Department of Justice, ultimately forcing all criminal charges to be dismissed so Mexico could separately review the case. After the dismissal in mid-November, Cienfuegos returned home and was immediately released.

Through a prepared statement, the FGR concluded that Cienfuegos had never met or communicated with organized crime figures–nor did he collect cartel bribes. The Mexican findings reach the exact opposition conclusions in contrast to allegations made by U.S. prosecutors.

COVID vaccine secret, a stunner

Answer: You SAY the sequence and the virus are real, but you have zero proof. Because you’re a “scientific authority,” people automatically believe what you SAY.

This is the sort of thing that happens in virology.

Of course, no mainstream virologist would admit it. He would talk about analogues and gene banks and PCR and representative samples and in silico (computer modeling).

But the stark reality is clear.

Assumption and guess and slippery inference do not carry the day.

You either have the isolated virus or you don’t. If you don’t, anything you say about “it” is useless. You can’t validly claim it exists.

As I’ve written and said dozens of times now, the virological meaning of the word “isolate” is quite different from the ordinary meaning.

In the technical world of the con and the hustle, “isolated virus” means: “We have the virus in a soup in a dish in the lab. The soup contains human and monkey cells, toxic drugs and chemicals, and other genetic material. Some of the cells are dying. This means the virus is killing them.”

That assertion is false. The drugs and chemicals can be killing the cells. And the cells are being starved of vital nutrients. That alone could explain the cell-death.

Furthermore, a supposed virus mixed in a soup in a dish in a lab is definitely not “isolated.”

Cartel Turf War Rages in Mexican State with 120 Murders in 12 Days

A once peaceful state in central Mexico has become the country’s most violent with more than 120 murders since the start of 2021. The region is under dispute by two organizations known for extreme violence and explosives.

Since the start of the new year, Guanajuato has seen more than 120 murders–averaging 10 per day. Some of the cases were political assassinations, targeted hits, gun battles, and even mass shootings at a funeral wake. According to Periodico Correo, as of January 12, Guanajuato recorded 122 murders.

This week, gunmen chased down and killed Guanajuato State Congressman Juan Antonio Acosta Cano during his morning jog. The attackers managed to escape. Soon after, the governor took to social media to express his condolences and call for a thorough investigation.

On Monday, state and federal authorities tried to capture a cell of gunmen from Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) which was linked to murders in the region. The operation turned into a shootout with eight gunmen and one police officer dead as a result.

One of the most violent incidents took place last week when gunmen stormed funeral wake. The shooters fired into a crowd, killing nine and critically injuring one.

The violence in Guanajuato is tied to a turf war between CJNG and the remnants of Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima. In a span of two years, the once peaceful state is now Mexico’s most violent.

Amazon hit with class action antitrust lawsuit claiming it colluded with major publishers to illegally drive up ebook prices by 30%

Amazon is facing fresh antitrust scrutiny after consumers filed a lawsuit Thursday accusing the company of illegally colluding with major book publishers to drive up prices for ebooks.

The lawsuit claimed that Amazon negotiated anticompetitive deals in 2015 with the "big five" publishers — Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster — that allowed them to "inflate" prices by up to 30%.

Amazon, which controlled nearly 90% of the ebook market as of 2018, was able to benefit immensely from the higher prices by charging consumers more, according to the lawsuit.

Apple was found guilty in 2013 of colluding with the same five publishers — using a similar pricing practice — to illegally fix ebook prices, and lawmakers in the US and EU have previously criticized Amazon's alleged use of the so-called "most favored nations" clauses.

Several ebook customers on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Amazon accusing it of violating antitrust laws by illegally colluding with the "big five" publishing houses to drive up the prices of ebooks.

The lawsuit alleged that Amazon entered into anticompetitive pricing agreements in 2015 with Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster that allowed the companies to artificially increase prices by as much as 30%.

Amazon, which controlled 89% of the ebook market as of 2018, according to a Bloomberg analysis cited in the suit, then used its dominance to benefit from those prices hikes by charging consumers more.

"Time and again, Amazon's response to competition is not to compete on a level playing field, but to try to eliminate the competition – and that's not how things are supposed to work," Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, the law firm that brought the suit, told Business Insider in a press release.

Amazon and Hachette declined to comment. The other publishers did not respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit alleged that Amazon illegally inflated prices using a tactic called as "pricing parity," which relies on "most-favored-nation" clauses. MFNs are, in the business context, agreements between buyers and sellers that ensure a buyer gets as good of a deal on that seller's products as any other buyer in the market.

But the lawsuit — similar to previous investigations by lawmakers in the US and EU — accused Amazon of using MFNs to instead prevent publishers from selling their ebooks to consumers at a lower price on websites that compete with Amazon.

53 Jewish groups lobby Biden to adopt Israel-centric definition of antisemitism

Jewish Insider reports today: “Jewish groups lobby Biden on IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism.” The IHRA definition is a non-traditional definition promoted by Israel partisans in which many negative factual statements about Israel are considered “antisemitic.”

The definition is based on a formulation proposed by an Israeli official in 2004 that has been promoted world wide.

The letter, sent to President-elect Joe Biden by the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations on January 12th, calls on “all federal departments and agencies” to use the definition.

The letter is signed by Conference of Presidents officials on behalf of its members and by the heads of the Jewish Federations of North America, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and the Orthodox Union. The Presidents’ Conference consists of 53 Jewish organizations.

The letter asks to meet with the Biden transition team and incoming administration members to discuss the matter.

Progressive Israel Network opposes action

In response, the Progressive Israel Network, comprised of nine members, issued a counter statement opposing the use of the new definition:

As organizations that care deeply about the State of Israel and about the wellbeing of the Jewish people, we are deeply committed to the struggle against antisemitism. We are thus obligated to share our concerns about ways in which the effort to combat antisemitism is being misused and exploited to instead suppress legitimate free speech, criticism of Israeli government actions, and advocacy for Palestinian rights. In particular, the effort to enshrine in domestic law and institutional policy the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism, with its accompanying “contemporary examples,” risks wrongly equating what may be legitimate activities with antisemitism.

Using definition is ‘attack on academic freedom & free speech’

The groups’ statement points out that one of the original drafters of the definition “has written that it was never intended to be used as a sweeping, all-purpose hate speech code” and that its use as such “is an attack on academic freedom and free speech.”

Both Biden and Harris have consistently supported Israel, despite Israel’s human rights violations, systemic discrimination, and daily violence against Palestinian men, women, and children.

However, the party’s grassroots members increasingly support Palestinian rights.

It is unclear whether the Presidents’ Conference or the Progressive Network will most influence the new administration, although the combined budget of the Presidents’ Conference members dwarfs the financial resources of its opposition.

23 die in Norway after receiving Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine: officials

Twenty-three people died in Norway within days of receiving their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, with 13 of those deaths — all nursing home patients — apparently related to the side effects of the shots, health officials said.

Common reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, “may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency, said in a Friday statement.

All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old. While officials aren’t expressing serious concern, they are adjusting their guidance on who should receive the vaccine.

The news comes just over a week after officials reported the deaths of just two nursing home residents after they received the Pfizer jab.

More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine in the Scandinavian country since late last month, according to official figures.

“We are not alarmed by this,” Steinar Madsen, medical director with the agency, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients.”

“Doctors must now carefully consider who should be vaccinated,” he added. “Those who are very frail and at the very end of life can be vaccinated after an individual assessment.”

The agency reported on Thursday that reported a total of 29 people had suffered side effects, including the 13 people who died.

Twenty-one women and eight men experienced side effects, officials said.

Besides those who died, nine had serious side effects — including allergic reactions, strong discomfort and severe fever — while seven had less serious ones, including severe pain at the injection site.

In total, more than 57,000 cases and 500 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Norway, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Health officials noted that around 400 people die each week in the nursing home population.

A Pfizer rep said the pharmaceutical giant is “aware of reported deaths” following the administration of the vaccine in Norway and is working with the Norwegian Medicines Agency “to gather all the relevant information.”

“Norwegian authorities have prioritized the immunization of residents in nursing homes, most of whom are very elderly with underlying medical conditions and some which are terminally ill,” a spokeswoman said in a statement. “[The Norwegian Medicine Agency confirms] the number of incidents so far is not alarming, and in line with expectations.”

Russia announces withdrawal from Treaty on Open Skies

Once the procedures are completed, notifications will be sent to the treaty depositories, the Foreign Ministry said

MOSCOW, January 15. /TASS/. Russia is launching domestic procedures to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"Given the lack of progress in efforts to remove obstacles preventing the future functioning of the treaty in a new situation, the Russian Foreign Ministry is entitled to announce the start of domestic procedures to pave the way for Russia’s withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies," the statement reads. "Once the procedures are completed, notifications will be sent to the treaty depositories," the ministry added.

According to the statement, Washington’s move to pull out of the treaty disrupted the balance of interests between the treaty participants and undermined the treaty’s role in ensuring trust and security. Following the US withdrawal, Moscow put forward specific initiatives "in line with the fundamental provisions" of the Treaty on Open Skies in order to keep it in place. "We regret to say that these initiatives failed to win the support of US allies," the statement said.

Washington for years blamed Moscow for selectively implementing the Treaty on Open Skies and violating a number of its provisions. Russia, in turn, expressed grievances related to Washington’s implementation of the treaty. In 2017, Washington imposed restrictions on Russian observation flights over US territory, triggering a tit-for-tat response from Moscow. The US pulled out of the Treaty on Open Skies on November 22, 2020.
