Gold will never be the standard. We tried it once. Too heavy, creates a drag on the economy, besides that, most other countries have more than we do now. We'd also have gold leaving the country. A new currency will come, eventually when the FED is in the hands of the people, but it's not going to be gold based. Gold isn't going to be so valuable. It will depreciate. What can you do with gold? You can't eat it. It has no healing properties. You cannot make tools from it, it's too soft. Gold will be pretty much worthless, save for it's use in electronics and jewelry.
