Mao's Great Leap Forward 'killed 45 million in four years'
Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, qualifies as the greatest mass murderer in world history, an expert who had unprecedented access to official Communist Party archives said yesterday.
Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing "one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known".
Mr Dikötter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million.

Laser beam hits California police helicopter while on a mission
A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew was wrapping up a mission at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, helping Napa Police track a suspect who had fled on foot, when it was hit with a blinding green light.
It was a laser being aimed at the helicopter from the second story of an apartment on Colina Court in southwest Napa, said crew member Whitney Lowe.
“It was easy to spot,” said Officer Lowe. “It looks like a giant light saber coming from the ground. It hit us for 45 seconds” over three bursts. He described it as a “blinding light.”
“Most people don’t understand the severity of the act, that it’s a crime and a felony,” said Lowe.

L.A. Cracks Down on Party House After Repeated Lockdown Violations, Shutting Off Its Power and Water
Meanwhile, San Diego County will increase enforcement against struggling businesses that fail to follow COVID19 rules.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office gave the water and power department the go-ahead to shut-off utilities to a Fairfax district home where at least three parties took place, which violated the city’s ban on large gatherings.
At least 40 people attended a party Saturday at the home in the 800 block of North Curson Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers arrived at the home at 11 p.m. after receiving a complaint of a gathering at a “social media influencer residence” and cleared the party, an LAPD spokesman said.
Police previously responded to party violations on Sept. 12-13 and Oct. 17 and issued warning notices.
Garcetti spokesman Alex Comisar said in a statement that each time they went to the home, officers informed the residents that large gatherings were in violation of the mayor’s public order.
The utilities will stay off until the mayor orders them back on, LADWP spokeswoman Ellen Cheng shared.

U.S. announces new sanctions on six linked to Hong Kong mass arrests
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States announced sanctions on Friday against six Hong Kong or Chinese officials it blamed for implementing a new security law in Hong Kong, following the mass arrests of pro-democracy activists this month.
Hong Kong police arrested 53 people on Jan. 5 in the biggest crackdown on the democracy movement since China last year imposed a security law which opponents say is aimed at quashing dissent in the former British colony.
“This action by Hong Kong authorities is yet another stark example of Hong Kong’s freedoms and democratic processes being fundamentally undermined,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.
Pompeo said 13 former Legislative Council members, an American lawyer and a former law professor were among those reportedly detained before being released on bail. He called for the freeing of all those held under the security law.

James Jeffrey is the outgoing United States envoy in Syria. During a recent interview, he rather candidly admitted lying to President Trump about the number of American troops that have been kept in Syria, contrary to Trump’s orders.
Jeffrey was appointed to other diplomatic positions under Presidents Bush and Obama. He is part of the permanent, unelected leadership class in Washington, DC.
Jeffrey was also a never-Trumper in 2016 and now gives advice to Joe Biden.
Do you remember when Democrats and people in media would scoff at Trump’s mere mention of the Deep State? It’s difficult to imagine a better real life example than James Jeffrey.

Four years after signing the now-infamous “Never Trump” letter condemning then-presidential candidate Donald Trump as a danger to America, retiring diplomat Jim Jeffrey is recommending that the incoming Biden administration stick with Trump’s foreign policy in the Middle East.
But even as he praises the president’s support of what he describes as a successful “realpolitik” approach to the region, he acknowledges that his team routinely misled senior leaders about troop levels in Syria.
“We were always playing shell games to not make clear to our leadership how many troops we had there,” Jeffrey said in an interview. The actual number of troops in northeast Syria is “a lot more than” the roughly two hundred troops Trump initially agreed to leave there in 2019.

EC president von der Leyen dares European nations to call her bluff with announcement of (mandatory?) vaccine certificates
Europeans must carry certificates proving they’ve been vaccinated against Covid-19 to travel, EC president Ursula von der Leyen told Portuguese media – likely shocking Europeans who’d never heard of such a rule.
Von der Leyen sprung the idea of a “mutually recognized vaccination certificate” as a “medical requirement” for travel on Thursday in the course of praising a similar plan outlined to her in a letter from Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“It is a medical requirement to have a certificate proving that you have been vaccinated,” von der Leyen told Portuguese reporters.

Trump’s last contribution to Mid-East ‘peace’: US cuts aid to 1948 Palestinian refugees
BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:00 P.M.) – The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has made the decision to suspend the funding to the United Nations Relief and Works (UNWRA), which has spent over 70 years aiding Palestinians that were made refugees by the 1948 War.
In a statement released via his official Twitter account, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused the humanitarian aid agency of fraud and wasting resources, while also claiming there were “concerns of support to terrorism.”
“We suspended funding to UNRWA, which is riddled with waste, fraud & concerns of support to terrorism. UNRWA is not a refugee agency; it’s estimated <200,000 Arabs displaced in 1948 are still alive and most others are not refugees by any rational criteria,” Pompeo said.
According to Pompeo, U.S. taxpayers deserve to know “basic truths” about the money given to the UNRWA, which he said was a hurdle to peace.
