3 Perhaps you slept through history class when they explained that fuedal serf DID BOT own land. Rather, in most feudal societies (e.g England) the King claimed to own ALL the land,, but willingly gave it to "lords" based upon their promise to pay taxes (i.e. royalties) to the King AND promised to raiise personal armies (knights, et al) to protect the Kindom in the event of war. The serfs were permitted to "rent" their land and paid their rent in the form of goods, crops or even cash. They were ALWAYS renters as were the "lords" since the King reserved the right to take the land back and give it to another lord. NO payment for the land that was "granted" just a withdrawal of the "grant".

Under the conditions of most serfs, there labor via production of crop & goods. If there was any excess above the "lords" demands, they were free to use their excess to provide the lascivious lifestyles they enjoyed.

As I an sure you recall from history classes, the American colonies were structured in a similar manner, except each citizen was allowed to be his own lord, subject to the taxes the King required. If he could produce a surplus, we could keep it. he could "trade" with others using a barter system or could accumulated and use the KING's currency.

In that way, these "commoners" traded serfdom for the opportunity to effective be their own lord, and that incentive allowed them to become "rich" and hire workers, purchase slaves either as chattel or via indentured servitude (time-limited "slavery/servitude)

Feel free to read the rest of the history of the (mostly) commoners than became rich and famous despite not being borm as "nobles" (i..e. landed gentry) and were free to pass their wealth down to their descendants (to the extent they were able).

Land grants and very inexpensive land encourage more people to come and we expanded accordingly.
