Our Mounting Orwellian Nightmare

So we are to imagine that those who objected to Biden's having stolen the election are responsible for the violence at the Capitol? And that, going forward, any public official who questions Biden's win should be removed from office, and that any corporate leader who objects should be fired? All this when the truth is that Trump in all likelihood won the election.

It is the perfect example of Orwellian speech. In his classic essay "Politics and the English Language," Orwell spoke of the condition where "words and meaning have almost parted company." If that "almost" is a measure of Orwellian speech, then today's Democrat leaders are beyond Orwellian. Their words and meaning have parted company entirely.

As Orwell also stressed, the decline of language is both cause and effect of the decline of politics. When politicians and media begin speaking nonsense, it is the symptom of an underlying corruption of political thinking. The idea that the president should be removed from office for having defended the electoral process is truly bizarre, but it has been repeated throughout the liberal media and by most liberal politicians and even by some conservatives.

One might say progressives like Nancy Pelosi have become "unhinged," but that would let them off the hook. It would suggest that they don't quite realize what they are doing. But what they are doing is the result of crafty political calculation. They want to tie President Trump with the Capitol violence to the point that he can never run again. The same political deviousness lies behind suggestions that he should not be in control of the nation's nuclear arsenal because of his supposed mental instability.

None of these charges has anything to do with the truth. Those most responsible for the Capitol disturbance were those who rigged the presidential election, and certainly these individuals and those who coordinated their efforts or knew in advance or concealed information afterward should be punished. One might say those who committed acts of violence on the Hill should be punished to the same extent that Antifa and BLM rioters were punished last summer.

But the charges against President Trump are Orwellian in that they invert the truth. The president argued, as he had every right to do, that the election was rigged, and he urged peaceful protest to defend our republic.

Even the president's calming words on the afternoon of the Capitol break-in have been met with Orwellian reaction. When President Trump said, "Go home. Go in peace," the media charged him with inciting further violence because he expressed his "love" for his supporters. That expression of love did more than anything to get them to go home.

VIDEO: ‘Moderate’ Dem Manchin Says Senate Should Explore Expelling Hawley, Cruz Under 14th Amendment

The alleged ‘moderate’ Democrat Senator is telegraphing his allegiance to his party’s leadership calling into question whether he can be a buffer against a Leftist radical agenda

If Republicans in Washington, DC, thought they had a firewall against the radical Biden-Harris agenda in US Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), they were dealt a harsh reality check when the Senator said the Senate should consider expelling two Republican Senators who dared to challenge elector slates to the Electoral College from the five troubled battleground states.

In an interview with PBS’s Firing Line, Manchin said he believes the leadership in the US Senate should consider expelling Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Ted Cruz (R-TX), arguing the two were complicit in what Democrats and radical Leftists are calling an insurrection at the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.

Engaging in a grotesque stretch of reason, Manchin equated objections to the certifications of elector slates from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Arizona by Cruz and Hawley to attacks at the Capitol Building that, increasingly, are proving to have been instigated by anarchist and far-Left radical forces.

When asked by Firing Line host Margaret Hoover if he would support a measure to remove Sens. Hawley and Cruz using Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, Manchin said, “Well they should look – absolutely – basically, that should be a consideration,”

“He understands that. Ted’s a very bright individual and I get along fine with Ted. But what he did was totally outside the realm of our responsibilities or our privileges that we have,” Manchin added.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment reads:

“No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress…who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Manchin, a moderate who many Republicans believed would serve as an ideological firewall against a radical Biden-Harris agenda, told Hoover that while the members of Congress were in lockdown on January 6, he tried to persuade Hawley not to continue contesting the election results, asking the Missouri Republican “please think of what you’re doing, please reconsider what you’re doing.”

US Constitution, precedent, and the rules of the Electoral College allow for challenges to slates of electors when evidence exists that they were fraudulently seated. Democrats challenged electors from Alabama in 2016.

Additionally, there is no evidence Hawley or Cruz directly caused or incited the violence at the Capitol.

To date, no investigation into the chaos, destruction, and deaths has been completed by authorities.

Biden Officials Reportedly in Talks With Tehran to Return to Nuclear Deal

During his presidential campaign, Joe Biden said that he would consider returning the United States to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) treaty, if Iran will comply with the conditions of the deal.

Officials with the incoming Biden administration have began setting the ground for talks with Iran over a possible US return to the nuclear deal, officially known as the JCPOA, as there are only a handful of days left until the Democrat's inauguration, Israel's Channel 12 reported on Saturday, adding that US officials allegedly updated Tel Aviv on the matter.

According to the report, people "on his [Biden's] behalf" have begun to "wrestle with Iran" over a potential JCPOA return.

Channel 12, however, gave no details about what is actually being discussed.

Earlier, reports emerged, suggesting that representatives of Arab states and Israel had urged Biden to let them take part in future negotiations regarding the JCPOA nuclear deal.

According to Channel 12, Israel is interested in "an improved and long-term nuclear deal" that would include restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program and alleged terrorism-related Iranian activity.

While Biden gave hints that a Washington return to the JCPOA is plausible, he also said that his administration, if coming back to the deal, would "tighten and lengthen Iran’s nuclear constraints, as well as address the missile program".

The latter was something that Tehran underlined was not subject to negotiation, and Iranian President Rouhani stressed that Biden was "well aware" of that.

Iran has also demanded that the US lift its harsh sanctions against the country before a mutual return to the JCPOA happens.

“If the US decides to return to the JCPOA without lifting sanctions, this would amount to extortion, because [Washington would then] put forward a new request for the lifting of every ban,” Kamal Kharrazi, chairman of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said earlier in the week.

The JCPOA, also known as Iran nuclear deal, including eight other international signatories (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States, Germany and the European Union), was signed in 2015, envisaging Tehran scaling back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The outgoing US president, Donald Trump, in 2018 instead withdrew the US from the deal and imposed additional sanctions on Tehran.

Trump's unilateral move prompted Iran to step away from its nuclear commitments, announcing in January that the country is ready to return to enriching uranium up to 20-percent purity.

Uganda: Dictator Claims Election Lead as ‘Bad Characters’ Steal Ballot Boxes

Preliminary results in Uganda’s January 14 presidential election showed 35-year dictator Yoweri Museveni with 61.31 percent of votes counted as of Friday morning, according to the Ugandan state electoral commission.

Museveni received 50,097 votes as of Friday morning, “while opposition frontrunner and NUP [National Unity Platform] presidential candidate, Mr .Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine was trailing with 22,802 votes (27.9 percent), according to Electoral Commission’s (EC) provisional results,” East African reported.

The lead reported by Museveni’s government is a highly contested one by many in the opposition given widespread reports of irregularities and his opponent, the former pop star Wine, accusing Museveni of sending police to raid his house.

Rushenyi County officials in the Ugandan district of Ntungamo say a paper ballot box was stolen around 3:00 am Friday while in transit from a polling station to a vote counting facility.

“Some bad characters decided to steal the ballot box. For that polling station people did not vote and arrests have been made,” the Ntungamo District registrar, Latif Ngozi, told Uganda’s Daily Monitor.

“We are in touch with Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters. We are going to have an election tomorrow (today) morning [January 15],” he added.

“The stolen box contained voting materials for Kacerere Polling Station in Nyarwanya Parish in Rushenyi constituency,” according to the Daily Monitor.

While reports of irregularities came in, Wine denounced an attack on his home on Friday.

“We are under siege. The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home,” Wine wrote on Twitter.

The Ugandan military increased its presence in the national capital, Kampala, this week in anticipation of the country’s general election on January 14. Wine had hoped to oust Museveni from the office of the presidency, which he has occupied for the past 35 years.

Wine, 38, is a singer-turned-legislator in Uganda who has led a youthful opposition movement to depose Museveni, 76, for the past few years. Ugandan security forces have harassed and arrested Wine several times in his bid for the presidency, most recently as he campaigned for the January 14 election.

Wine said on January 11 that Ugandan army soldiers “raided” his home and arrested his guards while he conducted a live radio interview in support of his presidential campaign.

Uganda’s government on January 11 said it would shut down most social media platforms used in Uganda ahead of the general election, citing Facebook’s removal of groups on the site supporting Museveni’s reelection campaign.

The security crackdown in the capital left locals feeling less like they were heading into a general election and more like their country was “at war,” a Ugandan human rights lawyer named Nicholas Opiyo told Deutsche Welle on January 13.

“It doesn’t feel as though the country is going into an election,” Opiyo told the German state broadcaster.

“It feels as though the country is at war,” he said, describing “scores of armored vehicles with mounted guns … patrolling the capital.”
