in Feb. 21, 2018, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it has reached a milestone of moving 9 million [short] tons of uranium mill tailings from the Moab site in Utah to the dedicated disposal cell near Crescent Junction, Utah, under the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project. This latest milestone, achieved on February 20, means 56 percent of the estimated total 16 million tons have been shipped.
In fiscal year 2017, remedial action contractor Portage, Inc., relocated 466,600 tons of mill tailings.
[So, at the current rate, relocation will take another 15 years to complete.]
The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project (UMTRA) will receive $3.1 million more in funding than officials previously expected, bringing the project's budget total from $34.8 million to $37.9 million for fiscal year 2017. Although they acknowledge that the additional money will boost the project, Moab Tailings Project Steering Committee members say more funding - including better security in that funding - is needed to get the cleanup completed before the 2030s. Moab tailings relocation project: truck overturns on haul road
A truck carrying approximately 40 tons of uranium mill tailings rolled onto its side Aug. 29, spilling some of its contents into a ditch at the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project (UMTRA) north of town. Project representatives said a cleanup effort has begun, and that the incident is actively being investigated.
The spill occurred on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property located adjacent to the haul road. Federal officials said they were contacted by Moab UMTRA project representatives and are currently coordinating efforts to ensure that the cleanup is completed.
The driver of the vehicle was injured and taken to Moab Regional Hospital, according to Grand County UMTRA Liaison Lee Shenton. (Moab Times-Independent Sep. 1, 2016)
Moab tailings relocation project may take until 2034 to finish, due to budget cuts
Although the first half of the tailings from the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project (UMTRA) have been successfully transported over the past seven years, it may take as long as 18 more years for the project to be completed.
An estimated project completion date of 2034 was given by Lee Shenton, Grand County's UMTRA liaison, during his presentation to the Grand County Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 3. (Moab Times-Independent May 5, 2016)
