Is this one of those billionaires POTUS was talking about?
Anon remembers Wendell Anschutz, his first cousin. Odd he'd be a TV nobody with family wealth like that and Military career.
NYT archive/wayback machine:
"Like many extremely wealthy men, Philip F. Anschutz does not like publicity. And, for the record, people close to him do not say much about him either.
Phil doesn't like to talk about his public life, Wendell Anschutz, an anchor man at KCMO, a CBS television affiliate in Kansas City, Mo., said of his first cousin yesterday. We tend to honor that.
But because of his wealth and activities - Forbes magazine recently estimated his net worth at around $1 billion - the 44-year-old Mr. Anschutz attracts attention.
The focus was heightened earlier this week, when Rio Grande Industries said that it had agreed to be acquired for $496.5 million by the Anschutz Corporation, the privately held energy and real estate company that Mr. Anschutz founded in 1965.
The move came as a surprise to some analysts, who could not understand why Anschutz, which is engaged in domestic oil and gas exploration and is one of the largest holders of commercial property in Colorado, would want Rio Grande, whose principal holding is the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

It's puzzling that people ask such a question, said a close business associate of Mr. Anschutz, who asked not to be identified. Rio Grande has done a credible job over the years, has good management and has maintained itself well. It is based right here in Denver, where we can see it. And we got it at a fair and positive price.
As president of the Denver-based company, Mr. Anschutz was ultimately responsible for the decision to buy Rio Grande. But the source said that the move was not taken unilaterally.
He is not a loner out there doing things by himself, the source said. He is an excellent team player, and works through the corporation.
A native of Hays, Kan., Mr. Anschutz attended high school in Witchita and graduated from the University of Kansas, where he liked to play the piano at fraternity parties.
After college, he joined his father, Fred Anschutz, who had formed a contract drilling company.
Shortly thereafter, Philip branched out on his own, and began buying oil and gas leases throughout the West.
In a move that may have reflected his views on the future of the oil and gas business, two years ago the corporation sold a 50 percent working interest in the Anschutz Ranch East field as well as exploration leases on approximately 250,000 net acres elsewhere to the Mobil Oil Corporation for an estimated $500 million.
Since then, the company has diversified its holdings further. In 1982 it picked up a 20 percent interest in the Pennwalt Corporation, a Philadelphia-based chemicals and pharmaceuticals manufacturer, and in August 1983 it bought 15 percent of the outstanding shares in Ideal Basic Industries, a Denver-based cement and fertilizer company, with an option to purchase up to 25 percent. If all of the options were exercised, Anschutz's holdings in Ideal would amount to $80 million.
Aside from a strong interest in Western art, which he collects avidly, Mr. Anschutz has few other avocations, the source said.
The business is the central focus of his life, the source said. He reads practically every business publication that is printed, and studies everything in great detail. Sixteen- or 17-hour workdays are not at all unusual.
Mr. Anschutz, who is married to a former airline stewardess, is the father of three children."
