I DO think the Jap ship is 1st marker, here's why:

The flag on the front of the ship is known as a "Jack".

The best information I've been able to find for the modern Navy Jack flown by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force is here:

The Navy Jack for the Japanese Navy is a white flag, red meatball. IT IS SQUARE.

It is not a pennant. Cap from the relevant page included.
