The US president said the security and humanitarian crisis on the southern border of the United States continues to threaten our national security, including exacerbating the effects of the pandemic

US President Donald Trump on Friday extended the state of emergency for another year over the situation at the US-Mexico border. This was stated in a statement issued by the White House by the head of state.

“The ongoing security and humanitarian crisis on the southern border of the United States continues to threaten our national security, including exacerbating the effects of the pandemic. The executive branch has taken steps to address the crisis, but further action is needed to address the humanitarian crisis and control illegal migration and the flow of drugs and criminals across the southern border of the United States”, – the President said. – “For these reasons, the state of emergency declared on 15 February 2019 and the measures taken to respond to this emergency must remain in force beyond 15 February 2021. <…I am extending the declared state of emergency regime for another year.”

One of the main reasons for imposing the state of emergency was the need to obtain funds to finance the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border without congressional approval. Thus, for this purpose, Trump was able to secure a sum of $8 billion in early 2019.

In mid-December last year, The Washington Post reported that the possible refusal by the future administration of US President-elect Joseph Biden to build a fence on the southern border would save the budget $2.6 billion.

Under Trump, the fight against illegals – stopping their attempts to enter the US and deporting those who succeed – has intensified. Even during the 2016 election campaign, he promised his supporters he would enforce stricter immigration policies and strengthen border controls. The White House master is convinced that illegal immigrants are criminals.

In October 2018, he threatened to close the southern border if Mexican authorities do not stop the flow of migrants from Central American states seeking to enter the US through their country. In addition, Trump has ordered the deployment of several thousand troops to help border guards. On 15 February 2019, he signed a declaration declaring a state of emergency on the border with Mexico. This allowed the US administration to direct funds to erect or repair fences on several sections of the border. Washington believes that this will help curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
