NYT: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Approved Blacklisting Donald Trump While on French Polynesia Vacation

In a recent article, the New York Times provides an insight into Twitter’s decision to ban President Donald Trump from its platform permanently. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, on vacation in French Polynesia, approved the decision under intense pressure from the company’s extreme leftist executives. Employees reportedly compared the platform allowing Trump to tweet to IBM collaborating with the Nazis.

In an article titled “Inside Twitter’s Decision to Cut Off Trump,” the New York Times outlines the events leading up to Twitter’s decision to permanently suspend President Trump from the platform.

According to the NYT, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was relaxing on a private island in French Polynesia when he received a phone call on January 6 from Twitter’s top lawyer and safety expert Vijaya Gadde, the notorious leftist who previously appeared alongside Dorsey on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

Gadde informed Dorsey that Twitter had suspended President Trump’s account temporarily to prevent him from posting further statements relating to the U.S. Capitol protests that could incite violence. Dorsey was reportedly concerned about the decision but he had delegated moderation decisions to Gadde and generally deferred to her on account suspensions and did so again.

The NYT writes:

But Mr. Dorsey was not sold on a permanent ban of Mr. Trump. He emailed employees the next day, saying it was important for the company to remain consistent with its policies, including letting a user return after a suspension.

Many workers, fearing that history would not look kindly upon them, were dissatisfied. Several invoked IBM’s collaboration with the Nazis, said current and former Twitter employees, and started a petition to immediately remove Mr. Trump’s account.

That same day, Facebook barred Mr. Trump through at least the end of his term. But he returned to Twitter that evening with a video saying there would be a peaceful transition of power.

By the next morning, though, Mr. Trump was back at it. He tweeted that his base would have a “GIANT VOICE” and that he would not attend the Jan. 20 inauguration.

Dorsey and other Twitter executives then decided that Trump had “crossed a line” and later that day the President’s account was suspended indefinitely.

The NYT writes that on Wednesday, Twitter employees gathered in a virtual meeting to discuss the decision to remove President Trump from the platform, many were grateful that Twitter had taken action while others simply wanted to leave the “Trump era” behind, but many were very emotional over the situation and cried.

Puerto Rico tax laws enacted in 2012 have incentivized thousands of Americans and businesses to relocate to and invest in the island, according to Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

PR is the new Virgin Islands, under Obama's watch, maybe that's where he parks his money

“I believe it is my moral duty to minimize my taxes,” Lobo Tiggre, a stock trader who moved to Puerto Rico to benefit from the island’s tax code, told GQ.

A 2020 IRS report found that 647 individuals who moved from the U.S. paid a total of $557,978,112 in federal income taxes in the five years prior to their relocation to Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico has become a popular tax haven for super rich Americans who take advantage of local laws, which allow them to avoid paying U.S. federal income taxes.

Over the last decade, thousands of wealthy Americans have built homes, started businesses and spent a significant amount of time in Puerto Rico, all in order to take advantage of the island’s tax code that exempts them from U.S. taxes. While just a few thousand have taken advantage of the law, the U.S. federal government has potentially lost out on hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

“It’s being done, in a sense, in plain sight,” Peter Palsen, an international tax expert at the Washington D.C-area law firm Frost Law, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “The IRS has the knowledge of who’s doing it.”

In 2012, the Puerto Rican government enacted two tax laws, Act 20 and Act 22, which were intended to incentivize wealthy individuals from around the world to move to the island and invest in its economy. In 2019, the laws were combined into a single law: Act 60.

Act 20 applies to companies, attempting to encourage them to invest in Puerto Rico through a series of tax exemptions, according to Sotheby’s International Realty. Companies that relocate to the island and are approved by the Puerto Rican government qualify for a 4% corporate tax rate and have a 100% exemption on property taxes and profit distributions.

Act 22 applies to individuals, offering them a 100% exemption from Puerto Rico income taxes on income earned after moving to the island, according to Sotheby’s. (RELATED: A ‘Mini-Switzerland’: South Dakota’s Status As Tax Haven Emphasized By High-Profile Divorce Case)

“I believe it is my moral duty to minimize my taxes,” Lobo Tiggre, a stock trader who moved to Puerto Rico for Act 22 benefits, told GQ in 2018.

Vittorio Assaf, a Puerto Rico restaurant owner, said Act 22 seems to be effective, according to GQ.

“They come all the time, they spend money,” he said of the people who move to take advantage of the law, GQ reported. “They buy apartments, they do investment on the island. I mean, I guess it’s fantastic. If they didn’t have these guys coming down, then there would be really big trouble.”

Between 2012 and 2019, the Puerto Rican government has granted 1,924 entities Act 20 benefits, according to a 2020 IRS report commissioned by the House Appropriations Committee. In that same period, 2,331 individuals were granted Act 22 benefits, the report found.

While the IRS’ information was incomplete, the agency was able to obtain the information of 647 individuals who benefited from Act 22. The individuals, who moved from a variety of U.S. states including California, New York, Texas and Florida, paid a combined total of $557,978,112 in federal income taxes in the five years prior to their relocation to Puerto Rico.

A 2019 Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DEDC) report found that 1,233 Americans were approved for Act 22 benefits. Thirty-five percent of Act 22 beneficiaries have started businesses in Puerto Rico, the report found. Beneficiaries invested roughly $1.3 billion in real estate between 2015 and 2019…

The report also found that Act 20 led to $1.2 billion in investment and 36,222 new jobs.
