Because he was known to be a traitor in the ranks while he was still in the military. Crashed several planes before he crashed and became a POW.
Caused numerous deaths on the USS Forrestal, due to his "hotshot" of a plane behind him. Caused the bomb to drop from the plane on the deck, caused a huge fire. While everyone else was fighting it, he went down to the officer's quarters and watched on closed circuit TV while everyone else was fighting the fire. Caught the first chopper to Saigon with a reporter, so he didn't even remain for the memorial for the sailors he basically killed. Was reassigned to another ship. Anyone else would have been court-martialed for crashing three planes before the Forrestal incident, but not when your Dad is an Admiral! Oh, and didn't mention while a POW, his North Vietnamese captors nicknamed him "Songbird McCain," for sharing strategic flight information with the enemy, and recording "Tokyo Rose" broadcasts telling the US Military that they were wrong to attack the poor Vietnamese, and whatever else he could say to damage their morale.
In the military when someone betrays you, you turn your back on them, and don't even mention their name again. Make sense?
Sauce (Although any mention of JM being responsible for starting the ship's fire have been scrubbed from the internet.):
