I have been and do work in Kazakhstan - there isn't anything white or light about the country. It literally reminds me of Orwells 1984, as people do not want to know anything they do not have to know. Astana is like a shiny new sphincter.

You can travel - sure. They have extremely tight currency controls - govt knows where every penny goes. People have no rights - only corps do. People are poor - away from Astana it is hard to find decent motel to stay in unless you have dollars, which they try to take from you on entry.

Everything is crooked and takes a bribe to get anything going, no matter what you are doing.

The people are beat down, and there are lots of Italians working there as managers, many from Sicily.

I'll go to Colombia, Egypt, KSA, China - lotsa places - but not going back to Kazakhstan again.
