Head of Mossad to Outline Israeli Demands to Biden for Rejoining Iran Nuclear Deal - Report

During his presidential campaign, Joe Biden laid out his plans to rejoin the Iranian nuclear agreement after the Trump administration withdrew in 2018, claiming that Tehran was not acting in accordance with the deal's demands to limit the development of nuclear material.

Benjamin Netanyahu will send Mossad chief Yossi Cohen to Washington to outline Israel’s demands from Iran in any re-signing of a nuclear deal, Channel 12 news reports on Saturday.

The network said that Cohen is expected to travel to the US in February at the request of the Israeli prime minister, where he will be the first Jerusalem official to meet with new US President Joe Biden. He is also reportedly expected to meet with the CIA director.

The report does not cite specific sources, but refers to “messages” conveyed between unnamed officials in the Biden administration and Israel. It says Cohen and his team will provide the Biden administration with all the information accumulated by Israel on Iran’s alleged nuclear program.

The demands will include a set of Israeli preconditions for the US to rejoin the nuclear deal, including Tehran halting its uranium enrichment, and an end to the production of advanced centrifuges; stopping support for groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which Israel designates as terrorists, and alleged terrorist activity against Israeli targets overseas; withdrawing its military presence in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen; and giving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) complete access to its nuclear program.

Israel is concerned that a new deal could allow Iran to continue enriching uranium as well as provide financial or sanctions relief sufficient enough to enable Tehran to repair its damaged economy.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said on Friday that "the window of opportunity" for the new US administration to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has limits, as Iran is determined to achieve the removal of sanctions and is opposed to any revision of the nuclear deal's terms. The top Iranian diplomat said that if Joe Biden's cabinet chooses to abandon Donald Trump's policy of "maximum pressure" — which includes an immediate and complete removal of all sanctions from Tehran — and return to the nuclear deal, then Iran, too, will resume its commitments in full.

"The new US administration has a fundamental choice to make: It can embrace the failed policies of its predecessor, and continue down the path of contempt for int'l cooperation & int'l law. Or, it can reject failed assumptions & seek peace and comity," Zarif tweeted.

On Tuesday, US State Secretary nominee Antony Blinken said that the United States would reciprocate Iran's resumed compliance with the nuclear deal, but would seek a broader agreement that also covers its missile program. Even before his ascension to the White House on Wednesday, Joe Biden has expressed his support for Washington re-signing the JCPOA, under which Iran agreed to limit the development of nuclear material in return for international inspections and the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

The Trump administration withdrew from the treaty in 2018 after accusing Iran of not complying with the deal, despite international observers and the European Union claiming that Tehran was in full compliance. Washington re-imposed sanctions on Iran, while the latter responded by gradually abandoning its own commitments.

In December, Iran passed a law to increase its uranium enrichment and stop UN inspections of its nuclear sites in response to the killing of nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, for which Iranian officials have blamed Israeli spy agency Mossad. At the start of January, Iran’s atomic energy organization announced that the country had succeeded in enriching uranium at 20 percent at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant.

Biden reeled in more 'dark money' than any other candidate in history, majorly outpaced Trump donations: report

That's a lot of money

President Joe Biden received a record-breaking amount of "dark money" from anonymous contributors that helped propel him into the White House. A Bloomberg report found that the Biden campaign accepted more dark money than any other presidential candidate in American history.

During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden reportedly reeled in a record-breaking $145 million, topping the previous record of $113 million that Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) received in his failed 2012 presidential bid against Barack Obama.

Former President Donald Trump's dark money donations majorly dwarfed Biden's, and he purportedly only received $28.4 million from anonymous donors.

A report from CNN in late November stated, "More than $320 million of so-called 'dark money' helped boost Democrats in the White House and congressional races – more than double the anonymous dollars that aided Republicans in this year's federal elections, a new analysis shows."

"It's not surprising that Biden set the mark given that the $1.5 billion he hauled in overall was the most ever for a challenger to an incumbent president," Yahoo News reported.

Meredith McGehee, the executive director of campaign finance reform advocacy group Issue One, told Bloomberg, "The whole point of dark money is to avoid public disclosure while getting private credit."

Open Secrets, the self-proclaimed "most comprehensive resource for federal campaign contributions, lobbying data and analysis available anywhere," defines dark money as "spending meant to influence political outcomes where the source of the money is not disclosed."

The South China Morning Post said Biden's campaign had previously "called for banning some types of non-profits from spending money to influence elections and requiring that any organization spending more than $10,000 to influence elections to register with the FEC and disclose its donors."

Amy Kurtz, executive director of the left-leaning nonprofit Sixteen Thirty Fund, said, "We have lobbied in favor of reform to the current campaign finance system, but we remain equally committed to following the current laws to level the playing field for progressives."

Despite running a super-PAC supporting Biden, Even Cecil said her group supports campaign finance reform, "We still look forward to the day when unlimited money and super- PACs are a thing of the past."

Democrats enjoyed a record-breaking third quarter of 2020 where the political party raised $1.5 billion through left-leaning crowd-funding website ActBlue over three months, according to Politico.

A Biden spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment by Bloomberg.

US Capitol protester charged with threatening to ‘assassinate’ AOC

The Department of Justice has announced new charges for a Texas man who took part in the US Capitol riot on January 6 and had posted a message about assassinating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York).

Garrett Miller is facing five criminal charges, including “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted buildings or grounds without lawful authority.”

On top of his participation in the Capitol siege, Miller is in legal trouble for posts he made online during and after the riot that ended up leaving five dead, including one officer.

“Assassinate AOC,” he wrote in one message, according to the DOJ.

Miller also threatened the officer who shot and killed protester Ashli Babbitt, an act that was caught on camera. Miller said the officer “deserved to die” and that he wouldn’t live long because it was “hunting season.”

Miller was open about his involvement in the riot, posting a selfie of him in the Capitol to Facebook, joking that he wanted to “incriminate” himself.

“Well, you did,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in direct response to the photos and his arrest.

“On one hand you have to laugh, and on the other know that the reason they were this brazen is because they thought they were going to succeed,” she added.

Miller’s lawyer, Clint Broden, called the threat to the congresswoman from his client an “inappropriate comment made in the heat of the moment.”

“His social media comments reflect very ill-considered political hyperbole in very divided times and will certainly not be repeated in the future. He looks forward to putting all of this behind him,” Broden added, saying his client “regrets” taking part in the protest.

Australian Federal Police raid Queensland properties linked to shutdown of DarkMarket website

Australian Federal Police (AFP) investigators have raided several properties in Brisbane and the Gold Coast in relation to the shutdown of the world's largest illegal dark web marketplace, DarkMarket.

Key points:

AFP officers seized a laptop, mobiles, thumb drives and hard drives in the latest raids

DarkMarket had nearly 500,000 users and nearly 2,400 vendors

Information from German authorities prompted the Queensland raids

The site was shut down after a 34-year-old Queensland man was arrested by German police last week near the German border with Denmark.

He is accused of being the administrator of DarkMarket, which was selling drugs, counterfeit cash, stolen credit card data, anonymous SIM cards and malware.

Before being taken down, the marketplace had nearly 500,000 users and more than 2,400 vendors. It had processed more than 320,000 transactions, while more than 140 million euros ($220 million) in Bitcoin and Monero cryptocurrency was exchanged.

Following the Queensland man's arrest, German authorities alerted the AFP-led cybercrime unit Operation Futurist, which led to the latest raids.

The AFP executed search warrants on Thursday and Friday in Park Ridge, Mount Cotton and at a commercial facility in Molendinar.

A laptop, four mobile phones, six USB thumb drives and five hard drives, as well as SIM cards and bank cards were seized.

Cybercrime Operations and Digital Forensic Teams are reviewing the evidence and they have not ruled out making arrests in Queensland.

In a statement, the AFP Southern Command Acting Commander of Investigations, Jayne Crossling, said it was likely Australian criminals had been buying illicit items from DarkMarket.

"Some of these items could have been used or acquired by Australians in Australia," she said.
