All pilots and crew are required to log a certain number of flight hours every month in order to maintain their flight pay. Many officers such as most commanders stuck to their desk all month and don't have a real mission use the time close to home making touch and go landings. Their flight paths keep them in a circle for a long time depending on how many hours they have to log.
