It seems to me it's more than semantics to state that the gods worshiped by the pagans are just demons. The distinction is important because it's clear that demons ultimately submit to the authority of God and Christ. So they are "false gods." Their powers are limited and circumscribed. They are subject to laws from the Father. So, while they're 'real' spiritual beings, they're not god-like in any respect except that they exist on the 'astral plane(s)' and influence our plane by little understood supernatural means. They're just creatures.
